Unhappy Please help. Twitching as the first sign.

I hope you can help me.

Back in the late summer I developed a twitch on the left side of my left calve. When it started it had a rhythm to it. It wasn't constantly there. It last a month. They my left eyelid twitch for another couple of weeks followed by my right temple. Sometime in between I had limb twitches when I would try to fall asleep. One of my fingers would twitch or my shoulder would jump or leg. Then that went away. Then in late September I started feeling something moving, bubbling on the bottom of my left foot. I never saw it but could feel it. Sometimes it felt like something was rushing inside like blood, other times it would be pulsing fast. One and a half months later my right foot started with the exact same sypmtoms. I also get this feeling that someone is taking a fine tip pencil and lightly touching parts of my feet even my toes. First the foot was the pulsing thing in one area then the pencil feeling everywhere on the feet and the pulsing stuff everywhere on the feet. Then I started feeling lightheaded and that lasted two months. I also started having strong twitches on my left buttocks. Would come and go.
I had a emg on my right foot for cramping in mid October and it was fine. Got worried about my left foot still pulsing or whatever it is because it is hard to describe so I had another EMG mid Nov. on my left foot which was fine. She even stuck a needle in my left buttocks. I was still scared and had another emg done on the left side early Dec. because I started getting twitch on my quad and left side calf again. Normal he said. He said (ALS specialist at hospital) that he had never heard of the sensations I described regarding my feet. Late Dec and Now my symptoms are

Calve twitches come and go on both left AND right leg. Area around the calves twitch, too. The area around my ankle I will feel something. The calves are like rumbles and sometimes just one twitch. Quad twitches both sides. Right side like worms left side just a twitch. Buttock twitches on both sides. Back of top left leg twitch, too. My left shoulder gives off a single twitch at least once a day. Sometimes my bottom lip has a single twitch and finally my tongue will twitch once when I am trying to fall asleep. Also the pencil like feeling on my feet has now started in both of my hands. My left hand will close twitch a could of times a day.

I am worried about the recent changes in twitches. My feet don't bother me as much now as the other twitches. I can have a twitch in my right calve then suddenly my right quad back to my left quad. It will happen in a matter of seconds. Or sometimes it is just a twitch in the left calve and thats it but it happens everyday. I have heard that als twitches migrate. Is this migrating. I can't understand why I twitch in random places consistantly but all over.

The one neuro lady who did one of three emgs said the foot thing would resolve. When I told her about the right foot doing teh same thing one and half months later she said we covered that with the emg that was done on the right side. The other neuro wasn't worried about my foot thing and so of dimissed it. All my physical exams (three were fine). One neuro wanted to put me on neurtontin thinking this is rls but this was before the bodywide twitching. Please can anyone offer any advice. I am 37 year old female with kids. I have had alot of anxiety in my life with death of aunt in the summer and divorce. I would like to say that this is all a part of it but with twitches that go like this and on both sides it really has me worried. Thanks.

Twitches alone are not indicative of ALS. They can come from any number of very treatable and not threatening reasons, including stress. If your EMG is clean and you can still perform most of your daily activities, I'd say you have nothing to worry about.

Like many on these boards, I have been twitching (and more) for 2 years now and I do not have ALS.

Riley,

Take heart. Although your symptoms are disconcerting to you, twitching is not considered a defining symptom of ALS (Mainly because there are many different things that cause it), and your repeat EMG's should further reassure you.

Has your neuro talked to you about Benign Fasciculation Syndrome (BFS)? It is a very real disorder that causes global body twitching and cramps. It is called benign because although the symptoms can impact quality of life, they do not result in disability.

Take care,

Robert

Riley, For 2 years I have had widespread twitching (among other things), sometimes I feel as if someone is lightly touching me in various spots (like your pencil tip thing-more like an eraser tip for me though). I also do not have ALS. That twitching can be pretty disturbing but take comfort that it doesn't have to mean something horrible is wrong. Those clean EMGs should reassure you that you have an annoying, but not life-threatening, situation.

Take care-

Lydia

sounds like bfs, try checking out a bfs forum to compare with others.

Best of luck!

Riley, I will just reiterate what the others have said. There are other forums out there dedicated to just BFS Benign Fasculation Syndrome (sp) Plus the great news is that you have NO atrophy or weakness which seem to be the true hallmark of the beginning signs of ALS.

Keep your chin up!

Did you find out what it is yet? My symptoms are EXACTLY like yours tonight and a week ago to my left foot was bubbling, I could feel like blood/fluid going through and I actually saw it rising and falling in a rhythmic fashion. I did have a cramp June 1st when I was snorkeling in Maui but that might be from all the movement to stay afloat with my fins. I have felt the other odd feeling of someone touching me/felt tip pin being glided on different areas of my body, I thought it was something paranormal for awhile so, I'm so glad to see others have experienced it too!

TwitchingFoot2,

The original poster for this thread hasn't logged in here for 16 months, so I wouldn't expect an answer to your questions if I were you. Unless she's kept in contact with someone here, we don't really know what caused her symptoms, and this is just one of our many unresolved cases.

If your symptoms have you concerned enough to hunt information about them on the Internet, you probably should be consulting your family doctor about them. There is a lot of misleading information online, and it is extremely confusing for most folks to find appropriate information about their condition without some guidance from medical professionals.

Good luck to you.

Thank you so much, I wonder is it a blocked artery that is causing multiple places in my body to be blockaded off from blood which causes pulsating sensations.

y doctor once told me the joke about the hypochondriac "What did the hypochondriac's tombstone say?" . . . Answer: "I told you so." So thank you Trfogey for letting me know about how she hasn't responded.

I hope she's alright.

I will find another doctor to consult, he was actually an obgyn.

I am freaking out as well about similar twitching. I have read about RLS but am focused on this ALS. I am 37m and have had twitching that has been all over but 95% of the time is in my calves and thighs for the past week. Sometimes I do get brief twitches in my butt or back or arms but like I said it is 95% in my legs. However, i never feel the twitches when I am walking around, moving or just standing. They are less pronounced when sitting, but are exaggerated when laying down it seems. Should I go have an EMG done to diagnose or rule out ALS? Thanks so much.

Kevin. Twitching is not diagnosed of ALS. Most commonly they are just a slightly annoying
, but normal phenomenon that some people have.
Weakness that effects a persons QOL is always the first symptom.
My advice with the EMG, is have one if you want to alleviate the worry, but not if you will not believe the results.
Personally I would not have an EMG for just fasciculations.......not worth the discomfort.

Good luck
Aly

you say you have been twitching for 2 years, with no als...your profile says "in the process of being diagnosed" being diagnosed with what?
