Hello again Marie

I hope those words from Jamie gave some comfort. As of right now, you have no idea what is wrong with your husband so do your best not to think the worst.

The pain radiating from his lower back down his leg sounds like a classic case of sciatica, especially with his sensory issues. Sciatica could very well cause denervation in his limbs but it could also be a separate issue from what is happening to him. However, that would be a pretty big pretty big coincidence.

So let's say for sake of argument, the sciatica is causing the denervation in his leg. This has more than likely caused him to change his posture and gait, which could cause other problems elsewhere in his body.

There is something called the kinetic chain, which more or less dictates the proper alignment of your body. If anything within that chain is misaligned, then the entire chain can be affected. Example: if you hurt your foot, you will compensate with a slight change in your ankle . . . which could lead to a change in the knee joint . . . which could lead to a change in the hip . . . which could lead to a change in the back . . . which could lead to a change in the neck. The chain here starts at the foot and progresses all the way to the neck. Your husband could have had leg problems due to sciatica, which could have lead to problems in his cervical region (neck region). This could have caused a disc herniation and the denervation seen in his upper limbs.

All of what I just said is pure speculation but it is plausable. Jamie mentioned a neuropathy: that is certainly another explaination for his symptoms.

Take home message: be hopeful that he has something treatable because he very well might. Focus on those things the keep you hopeful and as always, we are here for you if you need us.

Jamie/Wright,

Thank you for all of your help and encouragement. Joe's neurologist is sending him to a Neuromuscular specialist at the Mayo clinic in Rochester next week. We are hoping for some answers there. The Neurologist and the physician who perfomed the EMG both suspect MND but are not certain. I will keep you posted as to what we find out. Please keep Joe in your prayers.

Thanks again,

Maria
