Default Does my mom have ALS?

Hi ! I am new here and I wanted to know if my mom has ALS...
Here is the history:
My mom frequently woke up choking...some time passed and it never happens again. well, 1 year, I think, later, she starts to stumble in the streets with her left foot. later she started to limp too...she had like needles crossing her foot too and strange fasciculations on the leg. Times passed and she becomes worse. her left foot started to bend and the leg became very hard. the fasciculations and the other symptoms started, soon, on the other leg and foot and she couldn't get up from the sofa, for example, without help. Months later we had to buy her a wheelchair. then she began to feel fasciculations all over her body. Now she can't move the arms very well and she has another symptoms like: she cannot talk too much, she is hoarse and she becomes tired when speak. She also cannot breath properly, having deep breath constantly. She also choke for nothing. The doctors said nothing at all and the exams doesn't show anything! She cries too much and sometimes she laughs.
Please, tell me what is this...If you have the symptoms, etc.
Thank you so much and sorry for the long text.

Default Re: Does my mom have ALS?

The symptoms are worrisome and warrant further evaluation. To confirm a diagnosis of ALS requires an evaluation by a neurologist specializing in neuromuscular disease. This evaluation would typically include EMGs, nerve conduction tests, and other studies (typically blood and urine tests, MRIs, and sometimes a lumbar puncture) to rule out other disorders that can mimic ALS. Since there are so many mimics, it is important to get this evaluation, and it is not something we can diagnose here on the forum just by reading your description of symptoms.

thank you so much! but my mom already did the tests....nothing shows up! The electroneuromyography is the only exam that shows something. but the doctors don't say nothing! I know your position, and it's completely right. But based on your knowledge...it seems to be als?

We can’t diagnose your mom on a forum like this. Typically in ALS, the physical exam and EMG show specific abnormalities but other tests to rule out mimics will be normal. If she has already had all these tests and is going downhill without an adequate explanation, then I recommend you seek a second opinion from another neuromuscular disease specialist.

Question Re: Does my mom have ALS?

Somebody knows these symptoms? Are they familiar to you? I just want to know if there is a possibility that my mom has als...She is getting worse and the doctors only recommend another doctor. Please, somebody tell me the symptoms are like the disease or not. thank you so much...

I will try to reword my previous reply in case it was confusing. Your momís symptoms could be consistent with ALS and merit further evaluation. However, there are other conditions that can also have similar symptoms. We can not diagnose your mom on this forum. Her doctors need to do that. As I stated previously, please see a neuromuscular disease specialist for your mom if you have not already done so, or seek a second opinion from another neuromuscular specialist.
