Hello like many others dr google has led me here. For the past few weeks when I drink water my nose has been burning like if you get water up your nose when swimming. I noticed that after I drink my dry nostrils have traces of clear water in them. So my question is this. Is this a possible als symptom? I know water isn't supposed to go in your nasal cavity when drinking. Can bulbar als start with soft palate? I tried to search the internet to see if it was normal and of course the only thing that comes up is mnd. Thanks

I think I would start with a ear nose and throat dr... Not sure why you would even think ALS with these symptoms?!

Only because searching the net said anything with weakened palate is mnd related. I just wondeeed of weak soft palate is a first symptom of als.

Everyone has a soft palate (back of the roof of your mouth) and a hard palate (the front of the roof of your mouth.)

Your symptoms do not compare to soft palate issues concerning ALS.

But... you have to start with an ENT doctor.

I know that. I was wondering if soft palate weakness such as fluid going up nose is a symptom of bulbar. Or an early symptom. I've looked it up and everything stated motor neuron disease as the cause. So I thought I would ask people who know better than anyone.

I have not heard of that being a first symptom. I wouldn't be worried about ALS.

Ok thank you. Also I seem to be struggling to speak. I mean I can talk my words come out but I feel like I have to strain to talk. It's hard to explain.

Look... you can't keep adding to this Thread more symptoms you may think are beginning to develop without being seen by a doctor first.

Being that you have anxious concerns of the possible onset of Bulbar ALS...

this may help, years ago you had to have a referral from a GP to get an appointment with a specialist (Neurologist). Today many Neurological Centers and Neurologists will make an appointment without a referral.

Monday morning give it a try.

Ooops, tomorrow is now today.... it's Friday. Again, try it. :)

I'm setting up appointments to see what's going on. I was just looking for some insight or what not if these were possible bulbar symptoms. Thanks for the input. If there is anyone with any other thoughts they would be appreciated. Thank you.

Please understand that you are asking terminally ill people to support you when you should be seeing a doctor with symptoms that do not match ALS.

Let us know after you have something definitive from a doctor for sure. I wish you all the best.

Thank you. I'm just so scared and stressed. I'm not sure what is going on with me. Everyday I struggle to talk. Everybody says I sound fine but the palate thing and my speech makes me feel I am struggling hard to speak. It's so scary. I would love to think that maybe I'm just focusing too much on this and in turn actually creating the symptoms I am feeling. I've been told that you can actually cause physical symptoms by stressing and focusing on areas of your own body. That is a hard thing to wrap my head around. That you can actually create physical symptoms that are real with your own mind. Ugh. I guess there are so many other things that can cause these things. It just doesn't help when I google the symptoms I have MND is the o my thing that pops up. So I guess I was just looking for reassurance and it's very selfish of me to come on here and ask for it from people who struggle everyday. I will keep you posted if I do find something.

Until then... refrain from any more posts. :)

Vocal chord paresis

Ok quick question. Is vocal cord dysfunction and paresis an initial sign of bulbar or is that later in progression? Dr says I have paresis. I'm sorry I'm being blunt but frankly the stress of this is killing me. I'm assuming this is what is causing throat/voice fatigue for me. The causes are either idiopathic or neurological. So any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
