Default bulbar-swallowing

Ive had swallowing diffulties a few times this past month, and twice yesterday. I go to swallow and it just doesn't happen. I have to try again because The food won't go down. I don't have the problem with liquids.
It has happened about 5x this past month. and a cough, even though that could be due to something else.

I know this can be a symptom of bulbar als (according to dr. google).
but would it be the only one??

I am a 38 year old female, having the most stressful 6 months of my life already.
I made an appt with a neuromuscular neuro later this week.
Please and thank you for answers.

I can only speak for myself but I had problems swallowing thin liquids much sooner than anything solid. Stay away from Dr. Google and let your Neuro diagnose you.

Default Re: bulbar-swallowing is neuro clinical exam enough

I saw a neuro muscular dr today. My clinical exam was perfect. she said no need to order an emg, because she would see signs of weakness upon exam. Also, she said having trouble swallowing, 4 times in the past month- and that being the only issue--is not indicative of a neuro issue. she said a neuro issue would be very progressive. I have a very enlarged thyroid and am going to endo next week regarding that.
Should I push for emg?
Or is a clean clinical exam by a neuromuscular dr enough?

It looks like you received some great information from your doctor. It is likely a complete waste of time to get an emg. Especially as your doctor detected an enlarged thyroid- which can cause a variety of health issues depending on what is causing the enlargement. You have been sent to the appropriate specialist. That's great news.

Default Bulbar - emg

38 yr old female. Trouble swallowing since Jan . Liquids feel like they gather on one
Side of throat and get rerouted down my throat.
Musco neuro did not detect weakness and she performed emg bulbar area- tongue cheek sterno and it was normal .
Feel a lump or a sensation of something small on throat on one side only. Would bulbar have more symptoms on one side of throat.
Sometimes I think I feel more salvia
History of thyroid nodules-and goiter though ultrasound shows no big change.
Not bulbar als with normal emg and clinical?

If the Neuro did an EMG and says not ALS, I would believe him/her. The symptoms you describe can be caused by a lot of things. You must have seen other Doctors before neuro.

Believe the specialist.

Thank you for your reply. My endo referred me to neuro and ent to rule out other stuff. An emg would have seen signs of bulbar als as well correct

I would suggest a swallowing test, the they can see what is happening.

Or just see where this issue is coming from
