I started loosing grip in my thumb and forefinger. last fall. noticed atrophy in the same hand recently. EMG / MRI scheduled to see a specialist in March. Twitches, hand getting stiff. everywhere else is good. can lift weights. etc. being going to docs for a month now. scared

The weakness is the only thing that really matters, and even that is not necessarily ALS. What is it specifically that made you thin it was ALS? Did a medical doctor mention it?

Most likely carpal tunnel or some other local nerve damage. Don't be scared.

symptoms of ALS ?

last fall I noticed my thumb and forefinger were getting weak. Fast forward to Jan 2016. Told my GP. He sends me to a spine specialist. who sends me to EMG Specialist for testing. He is shocked I have not had an MRI. I have the MRI. back to EMG Specialist for more testing. He sends to Neurology. Neuromuscular Specialist. That appointment is coming up. Since :?:?:?:?:? weakness last fall that same hand has started to atrophy. I do have twitching. The EMG doc noticed it while testing. I do have twitches arms. legs. back, abdomen and chest. I am not weak anywhere else. I am not easily fatigued. I don't know what to expect. Can anyone identify with these symptoms? :?

Re: symptoms of ALS ?

Hank, I moved your post from the General Discussion subforum to here, the Do I Have ALS? subforum.

Your symptoms could be lots of simple things. When will you get the results of the EMG?

the EMG test results have not been released to me. I asked if that was what they are looking for. only say they must eliminate all possibilities. they are measuring my muscles . asking about twitches etc.

Looking forward to hearing from you next when you have the EMG results.

Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center --- ALS Clinic - diagnosed me positive for ALS Wed. March 2nd 2016

My wife wants me to get a test for Lymes disease to be sure. why do they not always perform a lyme test when testing for ALS?

I am very sorry to hear this. You are welcome, but I wish the answer had been otherwise. Wishing you a slow progression. When you are ready feel free to introduce yourself over on Newly Diagnosed

Some think the symptoms are too different but it was actually one of the few tests my neuro thought worth doing on me, a known gene carrier. I do live in a very tick infested area. Getting a test for lyme from your doctor is reasonable. Have they tested vitamin levels, heavy metals, anti GM AB?

How are you doing ? hopefully slow progression :)

Me? Yes I have been very lucky so far. I am one of the ones who got riluzole early and responded well. I slowed down after starting it. Thanks for asking

copper was the only test that was off. 66

I turned 62 Friday. No one would suspect I have ALS. My doctor suggested I take riluzole because in my case he thinks it will slow progression.
