hi,my name is mustapha,21yrs old and i ive in Accra Ghana. 6yrs ago i felt something strike me like lightening, immediately my right hand started to shake terribly. i felt a sharp pain in my chest. the next day i fell unconscious and when i woke up, both of my hand could not be controlled. my left jerked sometimes when i was walking. i never saw an expert until 6yrs after the incident. somewhere last month i saw a neurologist who claims i have als after some physical examinations. no test has been done yet. according to her i have a severe muscle atrophy on both hands and i have been referred to a physiotherapist. the only thing that buffles me is that am only getting stronger instead of getting weaker since the onset of the disease. its been six years and i can lift a weight of 25kilos and i can run miles..pls i need help. thank you

That sounds most bizarre. I would tell you to get a second opinion but in trying to find resources for you found that a few years ago there were only 2! Neurologists in your country. I hope it is better now but realize it may be impossible for you to find what we would recommend a neuromuscular specialist and to have an EMG. But if you are getting stronger it is not ALS. And certainly your description of onset is not like ALS. Nor could someone 6 years into ALS lift and run as you do. See what the pt says

If it was ALS you would most definitely be totally bedridden by now. Most likely you would have died years ago...

Can muscle atrophy be reversed

It depends upon the cause of the atrophy. Atrophy in ALS cannot be reversed. However, most causes of atrophy can be fixed.

In most cases, you cannot reverse atrophy simply with food and exercise, you must understand the cause.

You must work with a medical doctor to determine the cause (and treatment) for your atrophy.

We are not doctors, and so cannot help you. But we know ALS pretty well, and you don't have it.
