I am a 28 years old male, 176 cms, 135 pounds. Most of my work is done on a computer. About 4 months ago, i started feeling some numbness in my right hand. No pain, just a slight lack of control. I joined a gym then, thought it was possibly the result of lack of exercise. Started riding a bicycle too about 7 miles everyday. Numbness did not disappear, it sort of faded away over the next month. But I never felt entirely normal on the right hand. Always felt some tightness in the arm. About 7 weeks after that, I felt that I started losing breath while doing weights. It grew significantly worse over the next 2 weeks. I saw a chest specialist, had X-Ray, PFT, HR CT scan. All came out clean, no issues with lungs. I gave up gym, thinking maybe I was over exerting myself. But breathlessness did not completely go away. Over these 4 months, I feel that I have lost some strength in my whole body. Climbing stairs, riding bike, all seem more tiring. Now for the last 2 weeks, I am experiencing very occasional & very slight twitches on my right tricep. Over these 2 weeks my right shoulder seems to have weekened a lot. There is no pain or atrophy but raising my right arm requires a lot more effort and things seem heavier in my right hand.
I would seeing a neurologist next week.
Did anyone have a similar onset? Please share your opinions. The anxiety is a real killer.

No ALS is the killer.

See the neurologist then tell us what is said.

We can't really say anything, doesn't sound like ALS to me, but I'm not a doctor and can't measure what you 'feel'.

Ankur my friend,
I myself spent whole night on reading about that illness because I am concerned myself that i might have it with something like your symptoms. However i was dealing anxiety not once and i must tell you that if you look for symptoms on every single movement you make then you probably struggle anxiety or hipochondrism. As far as I read for now you dont look really clincally weak. I cant say anything for sure I cant find answers myself but goto a doctor make EMG if you can ( i will) and i wish you everything good! Remember ALS is rare desease its not sth that everybody get...

Eastman48, you have already been told you do not have ALS. This is not a general health forum for you guys to hang around and discus symptoms. You do not belong here. The intro to this subforum specifically states that questions will be answered by people who know ALS. It is time for you to go somewhere else. You don't have it. Your questions show that you don't know diddly squat about ALS. Now git

Ankur, if I may interrupt your Thread once.

Eastman48, you have posted 16 times... you have posted 10 (ten) replies AFTER you were told you do NOT have ALS by very knowledgeable members. Your commentary to other Threads is insignificant and somewhat insulting when you post that you just did 20 push ups. There are members on this Forum who can't lift their arms or walk. Grow up and your anxiety will clear up too. Enough.

@Eastman48,

I appreciate your concern, but I am seeking the opinion of members who have had some real experience with the disease.

Some information I did not add:

The pulmonary function test showed my lung capacity to be 76% of normal, which is categorised as mild restriction. All other parameters were normal. Have members taken PFT in intital stages of breathlessness. Does ALS reduce lung volume (restrictive) or change the rate of flow (obstructive)?

it sounds like you have had some diagnostic work done. I would suggest finding an ALS/MND specialty clinic and go through their process (assuming you have already discussed these issues w/ your doctor).

ALS sucks, but It Is What It Is ... and someone else has it worse so I'll try not to complain today!

Ankur, thanks for being very detailed in your post. You're also wise to ignore Eastman48. He needs to leave before he hurts somebody.

Despite the weakness in your arm, your symptoms don't suggest ALS. It is possible to have a respiratory onset ALS, but very rare. There are many other things it could be. Some of your problems could be in your heart and lungs, and some might be neurological. You were very fit just four months ago, and that's important.

I suggest seeing a general practice doctor first, for a good reason: If you see only a neurologist, they will not understand all about the heart and lungs; and if you see only a cardiologist, they will not understand the neurological issues. So I suggest a general doctor to coordinate your care between specialties.

You have one or two disorders to investigate, but I recommend against using Dr Google to learn about ALS, because your problems could be so many other things that are not paralysis, not fatal. ALS is not likely.

I wish I could diagnose you, but I can't. I know ALS fairly well, but I'm not a doctor. Good luck to you and try not to worry.
