Hi All,

I hope I am posting in the correct area, I am very new to this forum. I have very recently been diagnosed with Hyperreflexia and Tachycardia ( Rapid heart Rate).

A bit of a background: Until 3 months ago I was a very healthy 34yo. We went on holiday to Bali and I got extremely sunburnt (very silly I know). The next day I collapsed and appeared to have a seizure. These seizures plus various other symptoms have continued weekly for the last three months. I have had EEG, MRI, CT and various blood tests and all came back clear. I had a neuro examination and they diagnosed Hyperreflexia and Tachycardia.

The specialist did not really give me much information of Hyperreflexia, she just said you have Hyperreflexia and Tachycardia here is a prescription for Beta Blockers, come back and see me in 3 weeks.

My questions are:
Is it possible that a severe case of sunburn could trigger Hyperreflexia?
Is it something I will live with forever now or with treatment will my body return to normal?
Would the Hyperreflexia be causing the rapid heart rate?
Does Hyperreflexia cause seizures?

Thank you for taking the time to read my post. Any information or direction as to where i can find information would be greatly appreciated. A lot of the information on the internet seems geared toward hyperreflexia related to spinal injury, which I have not had.

Cheers

I'm not a doctor, but the only symptom that is even mildly related to ALS is the hyperreflexia, and some people just have that naturally. What you don't seem to have is a deadly disease with no cure or even effective treatment that robs you of everything it means to be human. Rejoice in that.
If you are concerned about ALS, which is what this forum is about, go to a clinic specializing in that-they should be able to tell very quickly.
Seizures are disturbing and you should get to the bottom of that. I dont think sunburn could do that. Now skin cancer you should watch out for.

This is not a site to come and pour out symptoms after getting sunburnt!

I'm an aussie, so can I just say that this site is for a particular terminal illness we call Motor Neurone Disease. You can use google obviously, so try sunstroke symptoms and long term effects, and you might find you cooked your egg in that sun.

Get back to your GP, find out about after effects from your sun-fun, and if not happy ask for a neurological appointment. Come back here only if the DOCTORS think you have MND, not because you jumped in here by chance.

all the best working with your doctors, they will work it out whatever it is it isn't MND/ALS

From what I have learned it is not uncommon for people with epilepsy to have recurrent seizures after sunburn and/or temperature changes. I would go back to your neurologist and do a workup for that. A blood workup for viruses that might have been required during your vacation should also be in order. (Many viruses can produce seizure-like episodes)

Repeated seizures often induce tachychardia as well as heightened reflexes.

Nothing you describe sounds like MND.

Thank you all for your replies. Clearly I have posted in the wrong forum. I apologise for any offence my post may have caused and wish you all the best.
