Here I am again.

In short, my other thread is to much down now.

-since 2000 I have "heavy arms"
-slow progression since then, in 2007 "heavy fingers"
-in 2010 "heavy/tired tongue"
-in 2012 "heavy legs", shaking when I go downstairs.
-since may 2013 fasciculations and jerks in my whole body

Have been to the neuro, his examination showed no abnormalities. I had brisk reflexes, but he said it could be normal. However he did want me to do an EMG and bloodtest for CK.

Unfortunately, this all had to wait because I recently had an operation. My leg muscles are atrophied because of sitting still for several weeks, so the EMG has to wait until januari, when I will be training again.

Since oct, I'm experiencing some problems with salivation. My mouth is dry, but there is a lot of saliva in my mouth I'm playing with before I swallow. I don't really choke, but sometimes it feels like the swallow reflex isn't coming and sometimes I'm coughing because my saliva is in my throat. It's hard to explain how it feels like.
Most of the time I do something with my tongue, I kind of suck with my tongue against my teeth, to get the saliva at the back of my tongue to swallow. Can't remember I did this before. No drooling, but when I talk, it's hard for me to swallow and I also spit when talking.

So. I'm worried. Not sure if these saliva problems are just in my head (I hope they do, but I think they don't).

It's hard to wait until januari, while having more problems then before.

The twitching and jerks are still there, however I sometimes think it's less then it was during the day. But maybe I'm just getting used to it...?

Does anyone recognizes the problem I describe with the saliva? Dry mouth, no drooling, no choking, assembling saliva and then suck it to get it at the back of your tongue and then you can swallow? I just can't seem to swallow without that sucking thing.

So, 182 views and nobody knows...

And I'm even more scrared, because this week a new symptom started.

I like to miss the swallow reflex now and then. Most of the time it's with bread, potatoes or cookies. Sometimes it's with my own saliva.

I just chew, and when my head is thinking I need to swallow, the reflex just isn't there. Sometimes I panic. When I concentrate very hard, after 4 times trying, I can swallow.

It doesn't happen all the time, but a few times a day. Totally unexpected, sometimes. Last night I was with friends and we were talking and drinking tea with a cookie and suddenly I couldn't swallow. Pretty scary.

This afternoon I was talking to someone at work an I suddenly had it with saliva.

Does this sound familiar with ALS bulbar people who have swallow problems?

Strange thing is: I do not choke and I don't have problems at this point with liquids.

I don't have slurred speach.

It's just the twitching in my whole body, the increase of saliva and the swallow reflex that sometimes isn't there.

I still hope for someone to response....

Some times when you think and try real hard about doing something, it becomes more difficult. Especially when you panic. I know you can't stop thinking about it, I know how you feel but maybe try and find a distraction of some kind. Take small bites and maybe that will help.

See if you can go to a ear, nose and throat specialist (ENT) and have a swallow study done. That might help with the panic.

It's a long shot but, from your descriptions concerning swallowing... you may have a problem with sulfites. Some processed tea blends, instant tea and many foods are loaded with sulfite which will prevent (block) that swallow reflex. And or a problem with MSG. (Monosodium Glutamate)

Have you had an EMG/NCV to help rule out ALS?

I only drink green tea, so I don't think this would be the problem.

No, I did not have an EMG yet. This is planned for januari, I'm waiting for the letter with the exact date. They will also do a bloodtest CK.

I have to wait until then. If the EMG is normal, I will go to the ENT for this problem with swallowing and saliva.

Thanks for the reply's.
