In march 2012 I noticed I had a wired vibrating felling in my tongue when sucking on candy or a milkshake through a straw. My tongue seems to feel weak, I often seem to feel tired when talking, like it's effort, feels like its hard to get certain words out , the back of my tongue swallowing part feels weak, lessens strength and my swallowing does not feel as firm and has loosen up. I have scalloped parts my tongue And I notice my tongue has gotten narrow over the years and is not as bulky as it once was. My lips seem flatter also. I might add I was bulimic for 5 years, could this affect my tongue ?

I had a nerve conduction without neddle and a ssep test, my doctor said ssep detects als ? I've never heard of that as a diagnostic tool for Als. I had a normal ncv without needle . Would ncv show als? My face has slimmed and my left foot had a loose slidding grip and the pinky toe seem weak. I've loss appetite and rarely engage in laughing, my face seems emotionless , the doctor doesn't seem to do neddle emg on throat, and I need to have this bulbar fear ruled out , and also I notice when I cry my lips barely quiver anymore and I have shortness of breath, every1 thinks I'm just in a state of anxiety, but these symptoms are real, please give me opinions, I'd like to move on with my life, but I can't ,I'm 28 yr black female, no Als in family

If the doctor saw no cause for concern, you should let go of the ALS fear and probably focus on getting the anxiety treated. Sounds like you've had a rough few years and that certainly could contribute to your issues, but that's best addressed by a professional. Good lluck and don't'underestimate the anxiety - its a very real and debilitating condition.

What did the doctor say? If he'd found something alarming, he'd have ordered an entire battery of teases, including lab work and an MRI.

What was HIS diagnosis? When they notice something off in swallowing or speech issues, they'd also do a referral to a specialist for a swallow study.

Bulimia causes all kinds of problems. It can erode your throat (esophagus) if you're not eating well, which I suspect is the case, you will feel tired overall.

ALS at your age would be extremely rare, it strikes the majority of people, when it's sporadic, when they are 50+. While it is possible to get ALS youmger, it's even more rare than ALS is overall. ALS strikes ome area and progresses. It wouldn't have bulbar issues at the beginning (without progression) and be in your feet showing symptoms already.

When speech is affected, others notice it before you do. It's accompanied.by swallowing difficulties, namely choking. It's not a feeli g of being weak, it's a literal inability to use the affected areas. There are specific things a doctor would notice in a clinical exam that would lead him to even suspect ALS.

So, again, what was HIS diagnosis of your condition?

Good Bless you truly and thank you again for yor advice, it's my tongue that worries me with weaker swallowing, I told my dr, he did EEG and ssep test and said it was to test for als, both technicians who conducted test said things were looking good, but for the actual drs results I go back oct 25th, he asked me on initial exam why I thought my tonge was weak, and I explained to him my sucking strength is not the same, it's a vibrating feeling in tongue upon sucking a milkshake or sucker, and he just ordered the test, I had a normal ncv/no neddle, but would that pick up als? And my swallowing has seemed to slow in speed, my tonge is skinny and narrow and the back part is not as strong as it once was

ALS doesn't affect sensation, and vibration feeling is sensation. If it was truly weaker, it would be causing choking by now, and slurring is almost always first.

Ok, do you have any advice as far as the ssep ,EEG and ncs test, are those a waste of test to rule out Als, I feel like my dr is not thoroughly examining me,

Thank you so much Luke, my major concearn is my tonge throat and speech, I'm just hoping this is only the affects of my previous years of bulimic condition. I feel the back of my tonge is loose/weak when I talk it feels very airy,,,I how I would love to give this fear up, but when I feel these symptoms of God know what, I can't stop with the anxiety

Bulky tongue can be a lack of vitamin B !

Do so the blood test !

Please keep your posts on one thread. Really no need to star a new one!
The tests that you've had are useful in localizing an area of neurological damage. The ssep is often useful for MS and others with sensory issues. ALS is diagnosed by ruling out other diseases and a variety of testing is done. You can check out the El Escorial Criteria for diagnosis. Your doc will base his decision to order further testing on the basis of the results of tests that he has already performed. Let him do his job.

Thank you momap53. My question is should I be Concearned about a ncs without neddle, can a ncv detect als ?

Please listen to your doctor. He is the only one who can diagnose you. We cant. In order to do that he needs to do his tests.
