Default Scared I have ALS.

Hello, I have just registered with the forum, after about 4 1/2 months of progressive symptoms. I have just seen my gp so far , who is very sympathetic and as helpful as she can be , ie I have a neuro referral appt in about 2 weeks . In the mean time I am scaring myself to the point of insomnia with the thought ( belief is probably nearer to it , in truth ) that I have ALS.
My symptoms started with a 'heavy' rt leg , feeling tight behind my knee and momentary lack of co-ordination. This became more pronounced and frequent and was sometimes accompanied by a feeling of dizziness. Next , the feeling started to spread over my rt side , like a sort of wave , involving my rt arm too and resulting in slurred speech , and then it would go, in the space of about 10- 15 seconds . This is still occurring , becoming more frequent and pronounced. The frequency varies , but at worst it can reccur after a few minutes. I have also started with muscle twitches in the last few days - worst in my left calf but can be anywhere. I don't feel any particular muscle weakness , it's more lack of co-ordination , eg difficulty in putting a cup down straight sometimes. Also , at night I sometimes feel a sort of 'buzzing' feeling all over.
In between times I feel quite normal ( if rather tired and stressed ! ) . I would be very grateful for any insight into this from people who really understand what ALS feels like . I apologize for the long e-mail but I wanted to make it as accurate as possible.
My main question involves the on-off nature of the symptoms - can ALS manifest that way ? The symptoms are more likely to kick in when I have just got up from resting or /and are particularly stressed.
Many thanks for your time and patience - I will be grateful for any answers !
Thanks again , Sue

You do not have ALS, sounds more like you are having transient ischaemic attacks. Next time you have one, you should get yourself down to ER pronto. If you are having TIA'S, and they are frequent, then it's very important you get treatment, before you have a stroke. I would be spending less time worrying about a condition that you have no symptoms of, and panicing about the possibility of an impending stroke. 2 weeks is way too long to wait to see a neuro!

Really, next period of one sided weakness.......call an ambulance if you must, but get to ER.

My post went to moderation, but in summary, no ALS, get yourself to the hospital, next time your weakness occurs, sounds like you are having TIA's. You need treatment urgently

Darn it 2 off to moderation, I have to use different words.........no ALS. Go to hospital, when you experience the symptoms again.

Thank you very much for the advice - I think stress definitely plays a part , but I am arranging a private neuro appt asap and will go to a&e if I feel worse. Thanks again for taking the trouble to reply. Sue

A Transient Ischemic Attack is a mini=stroke and very, very serious. They are a warning sign of an impending full-blown stroke. Listen to ALY and go to the emergency room. These signs can last anywhere from a few seconds to a few hours--usually only a few minutes.

I blew off several mini-strokes and had a full-blown stroke. Not saying it HAS to be that--but it's certainly possible. Two weeks isn't soon enough. See your doc and see about getting back in ASAP for a stroke work-up
