hey guys i ve trying to put als out of my mind but symptoms wont allow it.This week i have been experiencing what feels like sinus drainage that gets stuck in my throat, feels like a lump in my throat, causing me to cough,my voice is getting hoarse which scares me, and my tongue feels heavy in my mouth as im finding myself biting it on the sides.I ve done the tongue tests of pushing out my cheeks, rotating my tongue around my mouth, sticking it out side to side,i cant tell if its any smaller or twitching when i stick it out, it does move alittle.i had an emg done recently which was clean after some twitching in my legs.Does bulbar als present in this wat.Any ideas my mouth does does feel right.

Well if you have been thinking of ALS then your body is going to point to all the symptoms of ALS. Or "If you think you are sick, you will be sick." If your EMG was clear you shouldn't be thinking of ALS. If you are worried of something else go see a nose/ear/throat specialist. You may just have something called post-nasal drip, or a sinus infection causing it to make it harder to swallow and have drainage. It is hard to test your own tongue and be truthful about it. Ask a friend who doesn't know about your worries to watch you perform the tests of your tongue in the cheek/ tongue twitch. If they don't see anything...chances are it is nothing...just like the dr. said. Get ALS out of your mind...see a nose/throat/ear specialist before you even think of this diagnosis again. Take care.

post off to moderator...will show up soon. Try not to worry, your symptoms point to somthing else.

thx for your advice, i didnt know wether bulbar als would cause your drainage to get stuck in ur throat and cause a cough to rid of it. im trying dont to focus on als its just been hard with all twitching in my body, i dont have any obvious weakness but it appears i have dents in areas i didnt have before but ur right i should c if it passes and if not go c a ent.the hoarse voice is real scary though.

Bulbar--SLURRED SPEECH. Difficulty swallowing liquids--not caused by the gunk that drains from our sinuses. The hoarse voice is likely from the drainage.

Haven't you been here before with this symptoms or am I confusing you with someone else? Of course an EMG on your leg won't show up anything if in fact you had bulbar onset ALS--but the liklihood of it is not high.

Please stop all the self-testing! The tongue is a muscle--you can overwork it just like you can every other muscle.

The doc checked my facial muscles for weakness--and actually said that there is some substantial weakness--and I do slur--but very little and usually only when I'm very tired. I seriously doubt I have bulbar ALS.

Here's an experiment that will help prove to you how much in-tune you can be with your body (in other words--concentrating really hard on any bulbar type of issues)

When you go to bed tonight--pay attention to your heart. If you lie still and concentrate--I can almost guarantee you'll either feel or hear your heartbeat. When you're hyper-aware--you notice things that most of the time just wouldn't be noticed.

All that said--we absolutely can not say for sure that you don't have Bulbar ALS--only a neuro doing an EMG on your tongue can. And, for heavens sake--stop looking for tongue twitches--you'll find them if you look long enough--ALL MUSCLES TWITCH. We just aren't usually aware of it.

You really can worry yourself sick. Quite easily actually. Feel better!

My dad passed @ 68 from Bulbar Pasly in June 09. Last year I noticed I was losing my voice, coughing alot, sinus drainage, choking me. then a friend noticed it. I put it off for months, because if I had Bulbar I did not want to know and just live to the fullest. Then someone said Ray Rice on the Ravens had a throat infection, so I was trying to think positive because I don't think bulbar is passed to your kids. I went to my ear, nose & throat in tears because when I was grasping at straws for my dad, this Dr. seen him and knew my concerns, and I am also a smoker. He put the camera down my nose and come to find out from a cold I had like 6 months before had left inflamation in my voice box, and was being agravated by acid reflux(which i did not even know I had). He told me to take Zantac and gave me a script. So far so good. I worried for months for nothing. Could not sleep at night, depressed. Could be something very simple. Good Luck
