Hello everyone, I am in the progress of testing for ALS. I first noticed symptoms four weeks ago while on vacation, when my right foot was very fatigued with pain up my outside right shin. Within a couple of days I developed foot drop. Upon seeing my doctor he informed my I had a pinched Peroneal nerve and sent me to physio and for a knee X-ray. At physio I was told it was a mutifacet failure as I had weakness from S1-L5 and muscel wasting in my r buttock hamstring and shin. Knee Xray came back clear. Two weeks ago I started having pain in my other leg in the same areas and now my foot tires very easily (driving for 1/2 hour). I also have termours all over both legs especially when I am tired. I met with another doctor today on a urgent basis as I am really freaked out this may be ALS. I found this board today and I ma amazed at the wondrful people on here. I am having a hard time coping as my children and wife are already afraid as they have never seen me so weak. The new doctor was unable to do anything to alleviate my fears however he has sent me for a EMG, and a back scan. I am not a religous person but I sure am someone in need of someone to talk to about this.
Thanks for talking.

Re: Christians Here To Help You And Talk

Hello tayls7,

I've just read your other post, and have to say I really don't think you have ALS. Also, do read those stickys that are posted at the top of that area (Do I have ALS/MND), as there is a lot of information there which hopefully will give you peace. I won't address your symptoms, however--You'll get a lot better explanations for that on the "do I have" thread. I will just say that all of this happening so quickly and in the manner it happened isn't like ALS, and I speak as one who began with footdrop...

I think I can speak for all of us in saying we will gladly pray for you, as well as for your wife and children to have peace. Please try to be patient in waiting for your other post to be seen by those who have insight. I hope that in this case I'm right, as of course I don't want you to have this disease.

Blessings,
Ann

Re: Christians Here To Help You And Talk

Thank you so much for talking to me with all that you must have going on in your life., sorry I can't find the post it notes but will continue to look after this. My doctor couldn't find anything else to explain what is happening to me. I am really trying hard to be optomistic as I am usually a In control type of guy. I run a company with almost 70 people and am not use to feeling so weak minded. My real fear is for my family and so I am afraid to share how I am feeling with them so as not to scare them. Sorry to burden you with this but I just needed to talk with someone. Thaks you so much, you are truly a strong person for being able to help others while figting such a terrible diesase. I hope for my sake you are right, but knowing the little bit I ahve discovered about this diesase in the last week no matter my outcome I will have a new place in my heart for PALS.

I agree with Ann, Such a wise lady! It wouldn't move so fast to other leg if it was ALS.

Thank you fro your positive comments, I am having a lot of trouble keeping positive and this really does help. i ahev my EMG tomorrow although I am not sure what that will do as the doctor already told me he expects it to show nerve damage? I told my daughter I would pick out a puppy with her tonight, our last dog was a seeing eye dog that graduated so we have been without for a couple of years. Hoping that energy and unbridled love will lift my spirtits until they can give me a DX of some kind. I will keep both of you in my thoughts.

They're called "Sticky", not "Post-its" sorry--you see why I need to stay out of this page? The EMG can show the doctor a lot of things, not just ALS. Often there is treatment for other conditions. Praying for you... and advice is to not spend time reading about ALS or anything until after your EMG. Don't want to agonize over something not there, ok? Hugs~
Ann

Thanks Ann, I found them and will try and head your advice, although i have felt a little better just reading these posts, so many of you are leading rich lives it really offers hope.

Hi tayls7,

Welcome, I think:lol: (Not wanting you to have ALS)
I have read your posts here. Please do not let yourself get all wound-up by the uncertainty.
As I am sure you know, fretting about it does no good because change does not come by fretting. It is good that you will have an EMG/NCV test tomorrow.
I will keep you and your family in prayer. I hope you will get a favorable Dx and not ALS.

Judith

Judith, It was definitly meant as a huge compliment. I spend all day dealing with people who make such huge issues and get so angry over such little things, and then I come upon a group like you who are so willing to help someone like me get through today. From the bottom of my heart thank you.

I was hesitant to chime in on this thread, as you been given some very sound advice to stay away from these forums until after your diagnostic testing. But as I expect you will be looking at this anyway :), I want to make a reassuring comment relative to your above statement. There are various types of "nerve damage"... and the EMG will be looking for a very specific kind. So your doctor making that kind of (inappropriate) comment does not necessarily mean he is expecting the ALS type.

Try to stay calm, and get some rest... that will work wonders in itself.

Brian

Lori, thanks for doing that link for Jeff!

Jeff, when we welcome new people, as you may imagine, we know this isn't a place anyone would want to "need" to be. I'm sure you didn't offend Judy one bit. But, you know, your work must be a real pain... I'm being serious here. I hope that the stress from it isn't hurting you.

I'm very glad you're feeling more calm. Hint...try praying if you already haven't done so.

Blessings,
Ann

I was not offended at all.

Judy

Brian how old are you? The symptoms seem to be moving rather fast which would point away from ALS and more to CIDP or something in that nature. The NCV/EMG will tell the story but try to stay calm and I will pray for you tonight. The EMG is so useful and I hope that you will be getting it performed by a neuromuscular specialist or will be recieving a second opinion from one. Good Luck my friend and you are in my thoughts. Just remember not everything is ALS there are tons of things even if you pop a dirty EMG :)
