Hi,

Could anyone share their experience with clinical weakness & how quickly it spreads from one area to the next? Typically, would it be weaks, months?

Does it spread in the same area or can you have a weak hand, then weak foot?

Thanks

I found that my left arm gradually lost strength for two years before I could no longer move it at all. Now I notice the right arm is getting weaker - I am having difficulty raising it to get a dish out of the kitchen cabinet and some mornings I can't hold the hair dryer. Very similar to what I remember happening to the left arm two years ago. I also notice it seems to be progressing at a faster rate or perhaps it is just because now I know the reason and two years ago I didn't pay that much attention to the progression. Good luck.

I had my first noticeable weakness in August last year, had some trouble opening screw top bottles. My hands got quite a bit weaker in September. My legs also started bothering me that month and by November I had to start using a cane while walking. However my hands haven't gotten too much worse although I am now using a wheelchair quite a bit.

Ladyinn,

as your arm was gradually losing strength, did you also notice gradual atrophy or no?

Yes - at the time I didn't know it was "atrophy" - I just thought my upper arm was turning into an old lady's arm!

^^ And you didn't get an actual EMG until after a couple of years of this happening or was the EMG done sooner...was it dirty at that point? Im sorry for the questions, but I am just curios. Thank you.

!

let's see -- I had MRI's and CAT scans to find why I was falling beginning in 2006. The MRI's revealed a crushed vertebrae at level C-5 and the nuerologist thought it was to blame for the falls and possibly the problems with my arm.

I had back surgery in June 2007 but neither the balance issues or the arm improved - in fact got worse. I was unable to speak following the surgery and was told the procedure (through my neck) bruised my vocal cords and in time the voice would come back. It did but not without a change in cadence which continues to worsen and is noticeable most when tired.

At the same time the arm weakened until finally in August of 2008 I was carrying a plate of food and the arm just fell to my side and I dropped the dish. In September I had my first EMG. The doc said it was a neuro muscular problem and suggsted I get a second opinion.

In Septembeer of that year (2008) I flew to Eau Claire WI to see a specialist who was recommended by a doctor friend. Th diagnosed was MSA and recommended I go to Mayo Clinic in Rochester for a full work-up.

Being somewhat stuborn (some would say, hard-headed) I said it wasn't necessary since it didn't matter the label - since there was nothing to do to "fix" it.

After returning from that trip I began falling more and suffered broken bones and stitches on several occassions. My speech was slurred by the end of the day and my normal articulate speech pattern became jerky most days. I still blamed it on being just a clumsy old lady!

Finally this past summer I fell too many times and looked like a tatoo lady with various colored bruises over my body and was too tired to move after showering in the morning So I made the call to Mayo and anticipated their findings.

The tests at that time showed a very dirty EMG :) and ruled out MSA. So .... that is no doubt more than you needed to know but might help explain the progression.

Thank you for sharing your story. I do appreciate it.

Hi Justme, unfortunately, there is little rhyme or reason found with this disease. There is no right answer to you first question as to how fast the disease progresses as it is different for everyone. It could be days, weeks, months or even years before it affects different body parts.

And yes, you can have a weak hand and then a weak foot. There is no set order as to which area of the body gets affected.

Hi Ladyin, Halfin & Pete & LatinLoco

Thankyou for sharing.

Sorry that you are going through this. Any thing we can do to help? We are always here.. Linda
