Hi,

I just want to ask one quick question & I dont want to obsess but I thought someone here might know.

Last year before I had my EMG, I knew I had a possitive Babinski or NO babinski (Nothing really happens.....Toes dont always move , no big sensation but when they do & its slight, , they move more upward) & hyper knee reflexes........The ALS specialist Thought nothing of this.

My question is:

IF the possitive Babinski and Hyper knee reflexes WERE als, Would the EMG have Picked it up?

The Nueros that i saw didnt seem to think this mattered but yet Im reading that it IS indeed indicative of MND.

Thx for sharing!

Before I left, I just wanted to know your thoughts on this~~(I forgot to put this in my origional post).

Im not going to stick around & be annoying! I Promise!

What you are speaking about could be considered upper motor neuron involvement signs, or maybe you just have always been that way. You need both upper and lower neuron involvement and progression to be ALS. A negative emg is a good sign.

Also, please remember that what you may think is a brisk reflex may not meet the medical definition of a brisk reflex. Brisk is like weakness in an ALS context: the terms have specific, technical definitions that resemble, but differ substantively from, the common English definitions of those words.

Use the wrong definition and you will misinterpret symptoms, and we all know what that leads to.

Good luck.

Some people will exhibit hyper reflexes naturally (nothing is neurologically wrong with them). If the hyperreflexia is due to motor neuron trouble, it would be the upper motor neurons; the same holds true for the Babinski sign - upper motor neuron trouble.

ALS requires both upper and lower motor neuron death.

If the neurologist didn't seemed alarmed at your reflexes, I'd be doing the happy dance!

You did not describe a positive babinski sign, think of it as a primitive sign, it is what happen;s in a smll baby with foot, that is a positive babinski sign. Reflexes world also have soe clonus, nd your doctor would have called them pathologically brisk, would not even woory about ALS at all.
