hi all, I have never used a forum before but am madly looking over the internet for help. My mum has suffered all the symptoms over the last 2 years of what i thought and the doctors thought was severe degeneration...i learnt today it has a word - ALS. She started with a back operation 2 years ago, then one leg went into severe spasticity, she then started falling over all the time, tripping on small things. She then started not to be able to do up buttons, pick up cups and now her speech is going. She crys and laughs uncontrollably - a friend suggested that she has ALS. I live in another country from her and am trying to help her from a long way away. She has not been diagnosed as yet (which shocks me as she has all the symptoms from what im reading) I guess I dont really know what im asking but am just in a bit of shock over it all. At best I have read that she has 3 - 5 years....im devastated as is my family. We dont know what to do and how things are going to go from here...i know its not certain yet but something in my heart tells me this is what she has....any words of advice would be very helpfull....

I'm so sorry about your mom's condition. She needs to see a neurologist as soon as possible. If it is ALS, there is a medication that can slow it down and also there are treatments and medications to help control the symptoms.

See if you can get her to a specialist quickly.

Good luck to you and your family ... and your mom!

I would try to get her seen by a good Neurologist as soon as you can. 3-5 years is an average, I've been more than 6 years so don't lose hope.

AL.
