Hey there. My husband just called me after a doctor visit and said they want to do surgery on his leg again. This Friday. He has been falling a lot- about 4 times this weekend, his legs are just getting weaker and he keeps going down.

He did have an injury about a month ago when he fell in a drain hole and now they say the tendons are damaged and they want to do surgery.

My question is , will it heal if the muscles are deteriorating and when we go to Mayo next week will this throw off the testing as this is his worst leg of the two? I hate to see him go through another surgery if it won't do any good plus he had a really hard time coming out of the anesthesia the last time he went under- they had to revive him. The doctors don't know I know this but they leave the charts out and I used to be a veterinary technician so i do know my medical terminology and how to read their abbreviations.

Just looking for a little advice and really don't want my big red headed Norwegian to have to go through more pain then not get the results he is expecting afterwards.:?

I would wait till after you see the doctors at Mayo. I have no idea if the results would be compromised, but the doctors at Mayo can tell you if the surgery should go forward or not. HUGS Lori

I agree with Lori.
But why is he falling over the place? If he is like this he should be safe in a chair

He is still trying to do everything the same as he used to (in denial) . He is really finding his limits right now. I have talked to him about using the cane and walker that are in the closet but he won't use them yet.

Thank you for your suggestions I will work with him to see if we can postpone this surgery.

Go to Mayo first!

Yes, I would not have anything done without going through the ALS specialist first. People with ALS dont react the same to surgeries as other people. Plus as far as the testing, I am sure they may not get a result that is accurate because of the injury. My dad doesnt want the walkers or chairs yet either, so my mom had a bunch of handrails installed in the house, so for now we are hoping that will limit the falls. Got to be really careful with that one as you know. Hang in there puppy, and keep us posted!
Hugs, Kari

I agree, get to Mayo first! Let us know how the appt goes on Friday. :] hugs, Kay Marie
