View Full Version : Ode to an Immovable Object
BarryG 10-17-2009, 12:51 PM What once was
What once was able to wrap itself around voluptuous vowels & commanding consonants
What once was a sculptor of ice cream cones, able to excavate every last bit of flavour
What once was stuck to a metal post tasted on a dare on a frozen January afternoon
What once was able to infuriate my sister by protruding it out of my mouth
What once was able to curl itself up and launch watermelon seeds
What once was made temporarily numb by the dentist’s needle
What once was made temporarily numb by the brewer’s bottle
What once was part of my ability to blow smoke rings
What once was an instrument of pleasure
What once was controlled by me
What once was me
What once was
Zaphoon 10-17-2009, 01:05 PM Barry, if this was a question on Jeapordy, my answer would be, "What once was my tongue!".
Beautiful lament to such an important, everyday utility.
Zaphoon
BarryG 10-17-2009, 01:26 PM Thanks Zaph, I was brushing my teeth last night and noticed that my tongue is now just the floor of my mouth. I woke up at 2 and decided that it needed a tribute.
Now on to the Follies!
Barry
BethU 10-17-2009, 02:21 PM That expresses it perfectly. And I like that concept ... like a little "mouth rug." Makes it sound like it still has some purpose in life besides carrying around a lot of frustrated taste buds.
It used to be a useful little bugger, didn't it ?!?
(... and my poor redundant taste buds don't even get to taste Buds any more.)
brooksea 10-17-2009, 05:38 PM Why can't they make beer strips (and other flavors for that matter) like breath strips? I could think of sorts of mischief with them!
"No officer, I wasn't drinking I just had a beer strip!" I'll leave it at that! LOL
I bet somebody, somewhere has surely thought of such "taste" strips!
Your tongue wouldn't have to do anything but enjoy the moment!
brooksea 10-17-2009, 05:46 PM Hah! They do! "Firstflavor" test strips! Barcardi, Welch's, Skky and more use them as a marketing program to enable customers to sample flavors before buying!
I think I will look into this further to see if these little strips could be ordered online for a small fee. Wouldn't that be great for people that no longer have the use of the little "rug?" I could see a use for these in the "disabled," excuse me, as they say at the elementary school - SPECIAL NEEDS community!
Nice tribute Barry!
tdamess 10-17-2009, 05:53 PM i do not remember who's saying this is but, i like it ---Some people see things as they are and say "Why."
I dream things that never were and say "Why not---- maybe one of you can call the company that makes breath strips and explain the need for them to have all kinds of flavor's for all people who can not eat and drink --the more i think of this it could be quite the answer to satisfy the longing for the taste of food.. i would but, i am not good at talking for negotiation's ( hope that is the right word )
tdamess 10-17-2009, 05:58 PM p.s ---or know some one good at talking for you call

George Bernard Shaw:
Some men see things as they are and say, "Why?" I dream of things that never were and say, "Why not?"
...frequently mistakenly attributed to Robert F. (Bobby) Kennedy, perhaps because Edward F. (Teddy) Kennedy quoted it in his eulogy of RFK.
BethU 10-17-2009, 07:13 PM There's a "butter taste" spray you can spray on popcorn, and I believe a chocolate-flavored mouth spray for dieters. Somehow, it just ain't the same.
Blackpool 10-17-2009, 07:59 PM Great Ode to something we never think about until it is lost to us. Hope the great minds on the forum can come up with some great tasting strips.Looking forward to reading the follies.
tdamess 10-17-2009, 09:56 PM we can try , wont have the diet type
tdamess 10-17-2009, 09:59 PM it is under someones avatar , but now i know where she or he got it from don't matter i like it. thank you for information roadkill
brooksea 10-17-2009, 10:44 PM I emailed the company explaining the reason for a need for marketing this to those that can no longer eat by mouth. Maybe I will get a response.
My husband thought it would be torture to have "taste" strips. I told him if we are grilling and you can't eat but you can smell, you might like to have a little taste while you have nutrition thru a PEG! He agreed, for once! LOL
BarryG 10-17-2009, 10:52 PM "I told him if we are grilling and you can't eat but you can smell, you might like to have a little taste while you have nutrition thru a PEG! He agreed, for once! LOL""
I agree 100%, I would like my taste strip medium well with fried mushrooms and a baked potato with sour cream and bacon bits! And for desert, key lime pie!
tdamess 10-17-2009, 11:47 PM brooksea-- is you give us the e-mail adresse maybe we could all e-mail them and make an impact then they may reliase we are serious , more choices than a piece of Hershey in cheek

BarryG 10-18-2009, 12:14 AM Dream on buddy and don't eat your pillow!
brendapals 10-18-2009, 12:56 AM and dont forget the grilled onions!
brooksea 10-20-2009, 12:25 PM This is the response I got from the company!!! May be onto something here:
First Flavor is primarily a marketing company, and as such, we don't
have a process or procedure for 'selling' our great tasting edible film
strip products. We are in the process of exploring to see if we can sell
our product to help enrich the quality of life for people who are unable
to eat, such as those with dysphagia. Would it be ok to put you in touch
with our Wharton research team?
Are you inquiring to request samples?
I have asked for contact info for Wharton. Wouldn't this be great if the ALS community were one of the first to test these strips for distribution?:p
When I get further info, I will pass it on.
BarryG 10-20-2009, 12:31 PM Way to go CJ! Please let us know how it goes. I would love to try any virtual food that they have.
GlenBrittle 10-20-2009, 12:35 PM Mee too.
I did pick up some of those Listerine breathe strips. They work very well. Thank You for that tip.
Can they make those strips taste like chocolate ? I miss chocolate as it triggers migranes. It used to be one of the five food groups in our house.
If not chocolate , I would settle for a Jack Daniels or a good Bourbon.
Glen
tdamess 10-20-2009, 02:19 PM you go girl , and we all can write them if they don't believe this is a workable market
tdamess 10-20-2009, 02:20 PM p.s. it could help dieter's also
BethU 10-20-2009, 04:09 PM Taste strips are a good start ... but your teeth want in on the action, too. I have made bread and butter and just chewed bite after bite then spit them out, and that worked for a while ... very tasty and satisfying ... but it got the juices flowing too much. That's why my secret chocolate habit ... sneaking tiny bits down the right side of my throat ... feels so good! It coats and sooths the throat (mine is perpetually painful from thrush), lets me do some mini chewing and tastes good. They'll have to pry them Hershey Kisses out of my cold, dead hands!
The joy of eating is a whole-mouth thing.
tdamess 10-20-2009, 05:50 PM i know what exactly what you mean lol
Zaphoon 10-22-2009, 07:05 PM I'm with Beth on the divine taste of chocolate. My preference is Dove dark chocolate with a raisin thrown in. Reminds me of the old Chunky bars but much, much better.
Chocolate pudding, chocolate icecream, German chocolate cake!
Chocolate donuts!
Chocolate coconut cream pie!
The list is endless!
tdamess 10-22-2009, 10:03 PM and i though i was the chocolate lover lol
Zaphoon 10-23-2009, 12:25 AM I take my tongue for granted and all that it does. It is an integral part of being a brass player. If it ever stops to function, my trombone playing days are over and that would be a very sad time. At least you don't have to do any tongueing when you play cello.
I don't say much except for when I'm telling stories (and I tell them often!). I can't imagine what it would be like not being able to stick my tongue out at rude drivers (as I salute them with my two-finger salute). Why 2 fingers? The message is encoded that way. Ever hear anyone say, "Hey! Did you see that guy just give me the fingers?!"
I have an alter-ego named, "Danger Man" but he's really a panzy (afraid to salute in true fashion).
Oh well... I blame it on drinking too much coffee today.
Zaphoon
BarryG 10-23-2009, 01:00 AM Kim, thanks for bring this thread back to it's original idea. I promise that I won't stick my tongue out at you or anyone else but I still have use of my fingers so watch out.
