Shortly after my wife was diagnosed with ALS she needed a wheel chair. I found that it was too wide to get into the bathroom door. The chair was typical of all wheel chairs in that it had a metal ring attached to the wheel that normally is used by the occupant of the chair to propell it. Since my wife could not use her hands and arms these attachments to the wheel we of no use to her. I took them off of the wheels and that made the chair about two inches narrower. I also noticed that the wheels were not centered on thier hubs. This too made the chair wider. I removed the wheels from thier axels and revesed them so that the wheels were closer to the chair. These two modifications made it much easier to move the chair through narrow spaces.
