I am a person who has been skinny all of my life and didn't give the slightest thought to how many calories foods had. Whatever it was, I ate it as long as it didn't say "diet" on the label. Now, somewhat ironically, I am looking at labels to find foods that I can eat that have the highest number of calories and protein, fat is good! In my "Quest for Calories" I have found a few online calorie calculators and I thought that I would post them here in case other forum members might find them useful. The best one is:
http://ccm.about.com/
which allows me to calculate how many calories and protein a particular food has. I enter this into a spreadsheet and have calculated that my morning smoothie gives me about 700 calories and 20g of protein. My total caloric intake with four boxes of formula and all of the food that I can still eat is almost 3200 calories. I have gained over 4 pounds in two weeks and 15.5 pounds since my peg tube placement.
Two other calculators that I use are:
http://www.freedieting.com/tools/weight_gain_calculator.htm and http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calculator.htm
These two calculators that can be used to figure out how many calories you need and how many to take in to gain weight. I still talk to my ALS clinic dietitian about my diet but these tools help me keep her happy.
