Hi , I have been in hospital for just over 3 weeks and got home day before yesterday . I was taken in with dehydration and weighing way less than 6 stones because I was choking and aspirating . I was put on intravenous fluids and then naso-gastric feeds while they sorted out fitting me in as an emergency for a PEG . So after 5 days on alternate nutrition , they put my PEG in and may I say what a relief it is .
I know I voiced my scared opinion and was dreading the procedure . I need not have worried , after the doctor put drugs into my canulla I can't remember anything at all :-)
Now these fedds will give me back some weight and stamina xxxxx

This is great news, Tich1. I am very happy to hear that your PEG procedure went so smoothly. I'm sorry that you had to spend 3 weeks in the hospital though. Thank goodness, you made it through that! Keep us updated on your weight gain. I am glad that you are already feeling the benefits of the feeding tube. :)

Thank you thelma honey , I'm settling back at home and now have a carer , and an electric air bed , it's so comfy , even more so than the air bed in the hospital . I'm getting an electric wheelchair this week so I should be more mobile soon :-)

Glen, two things, about the steak, talk to Joel and about the biker bunny, Where do you find those pictures?

Google Images.

The trick for the good stuff , is to go into preferences and turn safe search off and save .

Then its just how bent you are when searching.

Congrats Tich1.

I still keep wondering how I am going to get a T-Bone down that little tube.

Glen

Hey Glen, if you get a Vita-Mix blender you can still enjoy a good steak! Yes, it will liquify a steak in seconds. It even makes ice cream, hot soup, smoothies, and anything else you can dream of. It is definitely pricey but mine has paid for itself many times over already because of not having to buy that awful formula.

Joel, I appreciate your sound advice. Vitamix it will be . Do you have a good place to purchase this ?

It you do a search there are a few that come up. Choose one that offers free shipping. Laura mentioned she got a used one off ebay. Since they are commercial units, and absolutely bullet proof that seems like a good place to start.

Hello Thelma honey , I'm more relaxed now seeing nutrients going in my peg and not having the stress and effort I needed to get anything down , I'm bound to gain valuble weight now . Hi Blackpool thank you , and keep that positive thought sweetie .
Hello BarryG and joelc , can you really put blended puree foods through a peg tube ? My peg nurse told me to make sure I flush the tube after each bag of food , I'm on Fresubin original fibre and Fresubin energy fibre , and flush after and between drugs , and never put anything else down it . Was she just being a spoil sport ...lol

Isn't it a relief, Tich1? Not only to not have to worry anymore about aspirating and choking, but also to be HOME. Make sure you read Barrys posts on a separate thread. He's been really successful in gaining weight, which is so important. Also, watch for the VitaMaster on EBay. I saw a few back when we thought we'd blend. Blessings to you! xo

Yes, Tich1, you can put regular food down your tube. My nutritionist forbid me to do it but I challenged her to try some of the formula she recommended. After that she backed off. If you are going to do it you need an exceptionally good blender, there is not a better one than a Vita-Mix.

Tich,

Thank you for sharing your PEG testimonial. I like how you stated that it wasn't the big deal you thought it was going to be. There are countless others out there that are thinking the same thing (it's a big, scarey deal!) and dreading the procedure.

I'm hoping others needing a PEG will greatly consider your procedure and follow.

Hi pamnandy , it is indeed a relief and the peg is so easy to manage , and totally hides even with my jeans and t shirt or tunic top .
I will look out for the Vita-mix joel , though I will see how my blender does first , if I dare to try ...hee
Hello Zaphoon , nice to meet you , thank you . I can't say enough about how I need not have given the procedure any scary thought .

Hi Tich, I'm so pleased the PEG is working well for you. I am the carer for my 77 year old mother-in-law, who is just in the process of being diagnosed with MND. She is in hospital at the moment with a naso-gastric tube, whilst waiting for a PEG to be fitted. I've noticed you're in Grimsby, we live just outside Lincoln - small world!

Hello alirobbie , pleased to meet you , sorry to hear of your mother - in - law . She will prefer the peg to the naso-gastric , I certainly do .
Small world indeed , I am amazed you're in Lincolnshire too . All the best to your mother-in-law , hope she gets her peg soon :-)

Hi Tich, thanks for your good wishes. She had to be admitted as an emergency for the naso-gastric tube as she just couldn't swallow the Fresubin drinks any more without really choking. We're hoping that the PEG will be fitted in the next few days, we're waiting for the gastroenterologist to visit her and make his assessment. She is looking so much better with the naso-gastric in, she has a much better colour about her, but she can't wait to get the PEG fitted. I'm really pleased your doing well - long may it continue!

Hi Tich, thanks for asking. It's turning into a bit of a tale of woe. I've been to visit her this afternoon, and her weight has dropped in the week that she has been in hospital from 41.9kgs to 34.00kgs!! No-one could believe it, they weighed her again, and that is correct. The dieticians were called down to see her - it turns out she has had diarrohea, which I have been telling the nurses about and they were giving her medication for it, then I think she didn't open her bowels for 2 days, so some bright spark prescribed laxatives for her which started the diarrohea again. Plus the Fresubin she has been having through the NG tube has fibre in it, so I think this is why she has had such a dramatic weight loss.

I'm getting to my wits end with it all. She still hasn't seen the consultant gastroenterologist, so still has the NG tube in, now this major weight loss - I could scream. The dieticians have upped her calorie intake by 400 cals, stopped the fibre Fresubin and have asked for the laxatives not to be given. My husband is visting her tonight after work, so I've asked him to double check that the laxatives have been stopped - she will be wasting away at this rate. I am going to insist that she is weighed again Monday and also that the gastroenterologist sees her Monday - this is getting beyond a joke now.

Sorry for the rant Tich, and thank you so much for asking after her. Take care. xxx

Hi, Tich. Yes, as Joel said I got one for Mom on ebay. I would recommend watching a few and then bidding. There are a lot on there. It took me a few times because I didn't want to spend a lot. It purees anything...and Mom eats real food now. Pasta with chicken and veges tonight. French toast sausage and eggs this am. The tube has been a blessing for Mom definitely. I do use my magic bullet for simple smoothies but the vitamix does everything. I even made icecream.

Oh alirobbie , you poor soul , what a worry for you . I waas taken in with weight loss and dehydration , and also lost more weight while on the intravenous fluids for 3 days and then 2 days naso-gastric , but fortunatly got my peg inserted then and eventually started to gain .
The Fresubin does give you the runs and squits until your tummy gets used to it , not good I know when one is trying not to lose any more weight . The Fresubin fibre was given to me to help the squits I was told .
I do hope your mother-in-law gets sorted out prompto , keep us up to date hun , thinking of you xx

Sorry to hear all she is going through. Hope it gets better soon.
Are there different versions of the vitamix. Like regular, super dupper, whatever. Which is best?

Hi, we found out yesterday that Gwen will be having a RIG tube fitted this morning, some time between 9 and 11 am. The gastroenterologist felt that a RIG tube would be safer for her to have fitted than a PEG tube, so fingers crossed it all goes smoothly for her. Also discovered on Monday that the scales that weighed her on Friday must have been wrong, Friday she weighed 33.9 kgs, Monday she weighed 43.6 kgs, so no dramatic weight loss after all, infact a slight gain!!

Hope you're continuing to do well Tich, take care.
Love Jane xx

My best goes out to you and Gwen! Please keep us updated. What a nice thing to see, in reference to the numbers on the scale going up! Funny how our worlds get turned upside down with this disease. As a former CALS, I personally would rather see numbers moving down! :-)

Hi Tich1, I had my PEG put in 3 weeks ago and after a very wobbly start, everything is fine now. I had a runny tummy from Fresubin and lost another 5 kg. I am now on normal food and picked up a kg. So go girl!

That's good news alirobbie , hope the RIG is now over and done and she can get stronger . I was weighed again and am back down to 39 kilos , but I reckon it's because I'm at home now and not in a hospital bed all day , I'm living alone so there's only so much a carer can do , so I can burn off calories trying to do things round the house . The dietician has upped them and I'm now onto bolus feeds .
Hi tdamess , I so wish I hadn't worried so much , I didn't need to put myself through worrying for nothing ...lol
Hello Ronelle , pleased you're happy with your peg and starting to put weight on , well done . I've been put onto Ensure Plus and Ensure Plus Fibre for my bolus feeding . Hopefully I can gain soon , I can't stay at this low weight .
I'll try and find a link for you MtPockets to explain rig :-) xxx
