Yessireee folks , I'm getting PEG'd. This is a pre-emptive decision while my lungs are still working well.
Now if I can get my left leg replaced with a bionic one, and get the Terminators left hand, get a cool voice like James Earl Jones , I will be able to go out and kick Darth Vaders butt.
NO , contrary to popular opinion, I have not lost my marbles. But , you might as well have fun with an unpleasant procedure.
Beth , are you reading for this weekend ? *wink* *wink*

way to go Glen! I finally decided that I needed extra calories over and above my formula so I am now having a beer through my peg tube. It is my first attempt at getting back to normal and while it is not the same as drinking the effect is the same. It feels good to have a cold beer again. And when I get one of those fancy blenders like Joel has I will have a juicy steak to go with my beer! And the voice is easy to get, all you need is a dynavox and you can sound like lots of people (all of them bad BTW) .

I would say good luck but you wont need it. The procedure will be a snap and you will be back here causing trouble shortly thereafter.

Excellent news! You will be very thankful you did it now instead of later. Easy procedure.

Glen, there will be some dynamite roles in "The House of the Little Women," including Madam March and her boyfriend Jack Hoff. I hope you guys all are up for these roles.

Glen thanks for giving us all an advanced warning that you will be absent for a day. It will be tough to carry on here without you but it is a very good thing that you are getting that PEG sooner rather than later. Of course it will be a breeze and I am sure you will entertain the hospital staff with your shenanigans.
I can't wait for this weekend's production...
Sorry that you are in a position that you even have to make a choice like this; but glad that you decided to do things on your terms.
I had you "pegged" as a take charge kind of guy!

Yep, I saw some time ago that the Japanese were working on an exoskeleton for people who could not walk. I WANT one. The price was set to be somewhere around $25000USD. But then I also looked up the tankchair, and want one of those too. Gotta have my toys.....

Any news on the chair yet Glen?

None yet. Seems everyone local is on vacation. I was at the Handi-House yesterday, who are the designated distribution channel of the ALS Society around here. They mentioned that there no more available for my size.
I was a bit leary of that answer , as they had chairs FOR SALE also.
I have sent an email off to a person that works for the ALS Society and am waiting a response.
Thanks AL .

Hey Glen...good decision to get the peg early rather than later! Can I ask what your fvc is at this point? I am still swallowing real well but find my appetite is bad...not sure if it because of being in a chair full time or if it has more to do with the pure effort of eating. This is coming down the road for me too...good luck Bro!
Barry....you do us proud...beer thru a peg is better than no beer at all!!!

OK guys , what more incentive do we need other than this.
YOU CAN HAVE A BEER WITHOUT WASTING DOWN YOUR CHIN .
Beer, Its not just for breakfast anymore !!!
Barry, I hear that if you burp you can taste it , have you tried that yet?
Rick , currently FVC is 57% . If I stack breaths with the bag , its 61% .
Al , just got word back from my ALS contact telling me to contact Joanna directly . She gave me her number and said she is currently on holidays. But I also got her backup associate name too.

speaking of burps , anyone find it harder to burp/belch now ?
I used to be able to do the alphabet, and carry on small conversations. Now its work to just get the gas out.
maybe a beer would help that ! HA another reason.

Where are you getting the operation? Do you have to go to Ottawa?

Ahhh..good stuff. Looking forward to your comments about it! I lived in the Ottawa Valley years back in the late 70's ...(my God - that sounds like a loooong time ago!) and have even been to Alexandria;)
Good luck with the chair too!

Yes, if you burp you can taste it. But even without burping the taste is still there in the back of your throat,

Glen, we've marked 9/15 as our day to have prayers and thoughts of you. I had to smile as I read your above post. You're a character! You'll do just great and nothing is likely to get you down. You've got what it takes.
We'll be waiting and watching for news on your progress as the time gets closer.
We hope you can look forward to it for the benefits it will give you and not loose sleep thinking about it as you wait. Sure, easy to say, right?

and thank you for making me laught i needed to see a good side of this problem and hints of what to do when it is my son at certain stages now what kind of blender do i need to get
thank you for any help
Glen,
I originally read the title as being past tense, as in "I got stabbed in September" And as I was waiting for my computer to load the page, I'm wondering why you waited until now to tell us, and did you think it had something to do with your ALS diagnosis (from the injury) and so forth.
I'm very happy to learn the real gist of your post, LOL, and wish you all the best in preparing yourself mentally for it.
Swallowing has been bad for me the last week or two again in my perception it seems to get easier, then worse. Just general fatigue makes a big difference in how well I manage, (or not).
But, not having ever even attempted to burp the alphabet, I can't help you out with that one. However, my youngest son cultivated this talent, so rest assured that I'm properly wowed.
I've noticed just this week a really weird thing when I swallow. If I swallow a few sips of thin beverage, such as carbonated water, it doesn't seem to go anywhere, some of it never really makes it down and comes back up in the back of my mouth (but I'm used to that) but then after about 5-10 seconds, there's this rhythmic contraction for several beats. Its right around the "upper" burp area, i.e. lower throat, upper chest, and then it feels like it all clears. This morning, with my smoothie, it happened, but instead of almost a clicking when it did it, it was this sound like a drain makes when its been clogged and it clears. Thinking its most likely not a good thing (duh) and may actually make myself schedule that next swallow study...
Echoing Dana, remember that the gown opens in the back....;-)

Glen - best of luck with the procedure. I bet you'll be happy you did it. As for burping, anyone else burp through their
tube? I do, much to my children's embarrassment. Can't do the alphabet, more of a bubbling cauldron effect.

Thanks for all of the well wishes. Psychologically, I was ready before the appointment. I know its a good thing.
Rose , I'm going to cheat and wear some shorts if I can. Its only a 15 minute procedure , but they be knocking me out with demoral or something. Not a general anesthetic. Im experienced on one side , and a virgin on the other ;)
Dan , alright. STuPiD TuBe tricKS ... love it. Like put a popped balloon over the end and make fart noises at will. Amaze your friends , embarrass the family !!!!

Dan, yes the bubbling burps are a hoot. Ever had an explosion? If your previous "entry" was a carbonated drink, when you hook the tube up next time, you can sometimes get a lovely fountain effect up and out of the tube. Woosh! It's especially effective if your caregiver is leaning over the tube at the time.

Hi Glen , great news for you , you'll be pleased when it's in . I've just had mine done and I worried for no reason , it was easy , and I don't remember anything at all about the procedure , which was done with sedation and local . The sedation is just great , and works a treat .
I'm laughing my socks off at the burpy comments , do I have that fun o come then ....lol

I wish my auntie would do this. She is to stubborn though, she is still in denial even though she's had this horrible disease for years... (7)
The doctor has repeatingly told her that she should get the tube put in before its to late for her nutrition, but i dont know what to do.

Glen,
I don't know how this flew under my radar! I must add to the banter.
First of all, I'm glad you are doing this preemptively. Having good lungs will help you through the procedure for sure. We still took Andy's bipap along when he had it done, though, so if you use one when you are laying down, you might want to consider taking yours along.
How will we all get along without your usual cheery and sometimes smarta** comments on here?? You must take along a Blackberry or something into the hospital with you. That way we won't miss out. :p You know, give us a blow-by-blow.
We will surely help you count down the days until the big event. Perhaps we should kinda send you off like you are going to battle! Then again, my Viking, we are already in the midst of one, eh? (See, you have me talking like a real Canadian).
Let us know when you get back. We shall all have a toast together, virtually! Those of use who can, will raise our beers in triumph!
