I had been coughing, a dry irritating cough, not a chest infection. My speach therapist was visiting me and noticed. Since I am now nil by mouth and dont swallow that much, but mop up the dribble coming out, her explanation was this. There is much less moisture going down now, and she seemed to think that this was making my lungs dry up and get kinda sticky, so she suggested I got a face sauna, and spend time breathing over it. It worked, my dry cough goes and it does feel like I am opening up my lungs a little. Small price if it works for you.

Thanks Jennifer! I wonder if that would help with the choking cough as well? I've got a steamer that we use for our son when he gets real congested. Think I'll get hubby to try it out to see if it relieves some of his choking. You never know...

Is anyone on inhaled steroids or a nebulizer?

I have a flowvent inhaler that I use if I think I am getting congested.
Why ?
Glen
Flovent should be used every day. It is for imflamation of the lungs. An Albuterol inhaler should be used for congestion. Have you ever been asthmatic?
I suffered from bad asthma in my 40s and 50s, but not much anymore. I've got the Flovent inhaler to keep my air passages open--I want to be prepared when my breathing starts to decline.
Some of the people on this forum with breathing problems might get some relief with a nebulizer--even if it's just water vapor.
I've noticed from my own experience, the neuros don't refer people to a pulmonary specialist. I am familiar with this stuff having suffered with asthma for about 20 years.

Hi Wynn,
You are absolutely correct. I failed to mention that I use it in conjunction with my Ventolin puffer. I do not use them every day. Only when I feel tight or wheeze. I like to reserve those puffers for when they are needed, hoping that they stay effective. Usually , I will run with them for a couple of days to make sure.
Yes , I had mild asthma attacks when I was younger (30's) , though they have pretty much disappeared.
My pulmo specialist is part of the team I see at the ALS Rehab center. What is really awesome about these people, is that they review my info as a team. When I remarked to my PT that I was going to go ahead with the PEG , my ALS doc referred me to a Gastro surgeon , without seeing me. And that is team work. They also do a pretty good job at updating my GP with their findings.
I hope everybody gets the same level of good treatment from their ALS Rehab centers .

Do you wheeze while sitting up ?
If so , get to see a doctor. You do not need any problems in your lungs. Remember that every little thing we get now is intensified by the muscle weakness that this disease gives us.
Second thought, go get checked anyways.

Hello Jennifer , isn't it strange how you can be losing copious amounts of dribble and yet have a really dry top palate and throat . Then get the cough and throat tickle . I'm a severe asthmatic as well and am on a nebuliser and that helps with the dryness . :-) xxx

Hi Glen , Rich and I have been gone for two weeks. We were up in the high mountains at Yellow stone. While driving home the last couple of days. I did have weezing while sitting up.. Today I don't have it. I am going to email my Doc in Denver . I am going there in a week..... See if he wants to see me. If I get it back tomorrow or when i lie down i will call and go see my Doc in town. Thanks, Lin

Are you having allergy problems ?
Different elevations may have different weeds and plants pollenating ...
I hope your weezing is temporary.

Nope, no allergy problems.... I took some cold med last evening. I haven't had the weezing today. Hope It stays that way. It comes and goes at night when I go to bed... This was the first having it during the day. That did bother me. Watching it carefully... along with the new twitches .and fingers locking down.... Oh what a unique group of folks we are???
