Last night we (I in my scooter) went out to dinner at a local, la-ti-da (read, awful) place. I ordered the lentil (w/chicken & sausage) soup and on the 5th spoonful I started gasping for air. My wife tried to Heimlich me and somehow I could finally breathe again. This truly sucks.

So PDaddy, you wouldn't recommend the restaurant or the soup? It's a good thing that your wife was able to get you breathing again, I know that I avoid going out to eat because I worry about choking. Yeah, I agree, it truly does suck but keep on fighting!

PDaddy, I had to perform the Heimlich on my Dad a few weeks back and it really did suck, as you say. It upset my Dad very much so he totally can relate to your experience. I'm so sorry you had to go through that. Thank goodness for your wife! I know it's easier said than done, but try not to focus on those types of incidents. Focus your attention on the many victories along the way!

Hi PDaddy,
I also choked two weeks ago.
I was in my hospital bed at home, eating, and screamed through the food stuck in my throat. My partner didn't know what to do, and started to panic.
I, too, was starting to panic.
I don't have any gag reflexes left, so I stuck my whole hand in my mouth, and pushed my fingers down my throat to try to dislodge the chicken stuck there. I got it and pulled it out.
A little scary...to say the least.
It is hard for someone to give you the heimlich if you are in bed. But my partner doesn't know how yet, and has been putting it off learning how. Guess what--he's arranging now how to learn...

My husband Dave had to be heimleched last July when the two of us were on a getaway (from the kids) weekend.
We had just gotten our food and taken a few bites. He always coughs while eating, so I was not overly concerned when he was making noises, but when I asked my usual "You OK?" he shook his head instead of the usual thumbs up. I jumped up from the table, and tried to dislodge it, when someone pushed me aside and said "excuse me ma'am". Seconds later "Scott The Bartender" successfully performed the heimlech manouver on Dave and a piece of shrimp popped out.
So, we stood awkwardly around for a couple of seconds, then sat down to finish our meal and Scott went back to pouring drinks. And we could only laugh about it. That is, until we were getting ready to leave and took all the cash we had on us and gave it to "Scott The Bartender" thanking him for saving Dave's life. At which point I became embarassingly emotional.
From that day forward Dave pureed all his food or made sure he stuck with the soup, refried beans, or cream cheese crepes when eating out. He got a PEG tube in Feb which has been so great, I wish he had gotten it last year.
And thanks again to "Scott The Bartender" where ever you are!
My big restaurant scene involved aspirating on shaved coconut. Really, I should have seen it coming.

My mom can sort of handle sherbet or popsicles but regular ice cream doesn't work anymore. Last night the sherbet didn't work either which is just not fair, especially when her eyes lit up when I asked if she wanted some. She has also had her restaurant choking experience. I feel so bad and I don't want to eat around her. I guess the upside is that she can't smell very well so that probably helps.
