Hi, my name is Jennifer and I'm looking for some assistance. My dad hasn't officially been diagnosed with ALS yet, but we have a meeting with his neurologist on Friday and that's kind of what we're expecting. If that's the case, I will of course implore my dad to get a second oppinion.
But, can someone help me out with a list of questions to ask the doctor at this appointment should he actually provide us with an ALS diagnosis?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Jennifer

Jennifer ... here's hoping you get good news Friday.
If the dx is ALS, I'd ask about treatment. You're in Columbus and I know there must be excellent university clinics for motor neuron disease. It would be good to have him seen at a multi-disciplinary clinic where he can be treated by a team of therapists. Also, I would ask about Rilutek, a med that is known to slow ALS progression.
Ask about resources, such as MDA (Muscular Dystrophy Assoc.) and ALSA. I would also ask for a way to contact your neuro easily (e-mail or phone) with more questions. I always think of a million things to ask after I leave, and there will be a lot of things you'll think of later about your dad's own situation.
If the neuro does say ALS, it will probably take you and your dad a couple weeks to begin to process it, so don't try to rush into action. You and your dad may have very different ways of handling it, and whatever way is right for each of you is equally valid.
Here's hoping for good news. I'll be praying for you both.
They got you Beth. Jennifer's post was from March 25th. I checked and he was diagnosed with ALS on March 27. She has other posts since then. Click on her name then see other posts.
