I took my mum to see Jan DeVries the other day (he's a complementary/alternative therapy doctor who has also practiced conventional medicine.) He told us of a client of his who has been living with motor neuron disease for almost 30 years. she can still talk and swallow, and while her limb movement isn't good she is still an avid swimmer.
it's your prerogative whether you believe this or not, but it made our day a tiny bit brighter.

Hello Rocmg
Thank you for making a somewhat dismal day just a little bit brighter. Always looking for some encouragment.
Steven Hawking has been living with MND for that long as well. I do wonder if he has AlS or some weird variant. They can't have the garden variety that most of us get. Good for them that they can live that long but I haven't seen their tests so can only surmise.

It should be mentioned though that there are some PALS who have lived with the disease for 20+ years who have been ventilator dependent for many of those years. They would probably be consdered to have "classical" ALS. A good example is Charlie Wedemeyers, who's had the disease for 30 years, most of them spent on a ventilator.
