ALS grants available

Dec. 19, 2008

The Jim "Catfish" Hunter Chapter of the ALS Association is offering Lowe's Home Modification Grants to provide construction materials for projects enhancing mobility, increasing independence and improving the quality of life for people with ALS in North Carolina.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. The disease leads to the loss of voluntary muscle movement and makes it nearly impossible for patients to live in their homes without modifications.

The association will provide 10 grants of $3,000 each for projects including bathroom or kitchen modifications and exterior projects that will improve accessibility to one's home.

Grants may also be made to people with primary lateral sclerosis, a rare motor neuron disease that is similar to ALS.

Support for the grants comes from the Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation.

To apply, go to CatfishChapter.org, get an application, and mail it in by Friday, Jan. 30.

For more information, contact Sue Humphries, director of care services for the chapter, at 877-568-4347.

For Canadians my wife also found that the CMHC is providing "forgivable" loans for renovations for disabled persons. Some conditions apply and information can be found on line at thier website;
