My husbands father died of ALS 6 years ago, my husband has been having "twitches " occasionally for the last year , but for the last 5 or 6 weeks they are non-stop, he also has some numbness in his toe, he says it feels like it is dead. How often does ALS start with "twitches"? We have not noticed any weakness yet. He is only 39:|

Usually you would notice weakness as well as the twitches. Given the family history I'd have it looked at. If it was me I'd wait until after Christmas unless he's really freaking out.
