Confused on the difference

My Mom was diagnosed with MND last year. Apparently, she has been living with it for four (almost 5) years now. What I'm confused about is that when she explained it to me, she said it was exactly like ALS only with a slower onset. I guess I'm confused about how it can be exactly like ALS but not be ALS. Does anyone have any insight?

Hi there. There are different MND's. In Europe I believe they call ALS MND and in North America we distinguish ALS from the other MND's. Your mom could have PMA, or PLS or some other variant. There are explanations of these 2 disorders on the forum list on the front page as well as a definition section on the sign in page.
