I use an IPhone 4s because I can dictate texts, shopping lists, calendars and Siri will do almost anything! As my dominanat hand arosens, this phone has been a real blessing. I also got shock proof box so the ever present dropsies don't kill it.

What do you you use your phone for? How often do you use it?
If you want the most freedom you need to buy an "unlocked" phone. An unlocked phone is a phone not bound to any specific carrier or contract.
Most phones advertised are "discounted" ($0, $100, etc.) but are locked to a specific carrier and require you to commit to a 2 or 3 year contract. If you have a smart phone they will also require you to purchase a data plan for the term of the contract which adds to the cost.
Although getting a discounted phone by signing a 3 year contract may seem like a good idea now there is a risk that you will soon lose the ability to use the phone but still be stuck with monthly contract payments for a long time.
If you buy an unlocked phone you will be able to sign up with any carrier you want on a month to month basis. You can cancel at any time and only pay for the services you want. You have complete freedom. Unfortunately unlocked versions of the latest smartphones are very expensive (eg. 16gb iphone 4s $649).
However if you don't need the latest version of a phone you can pick up earlier versions pretty cheaply off of ebay.
They are practically giving away blackberries.
I am using my wife's 3 year iphone on a month to month basis. I don't pay for a data plan. I can't really use it anymore anyway.

I use my phone to make calls and too also answer my phone with the help of Bluetooth. This way i don't need any help I also have 911 as the first phone number in my phone directory also has a Calendar that reminds you of special events you have on the Calendar.
I got tired of having to ask someone to dial my phone every time I wanted too call someone. So, I called Dynavox talked talked to the nicest guy but then they have all been nice to me but anyway he said it really wasn't something they do which I knew but then he said wait let me check something. When he came back on the phone he said I just got on Google and put in your problem. He said other people have had the same problem and they have put their fixes out you might try them. I went to Google put in my problem the fix was go to Start, Control Panel, Add or Remove, then the item I wanted fixed then clicked on change or remove then Repair and it fixed my problem .
