Friend having occasional pain (pretty severe - sudden and intermittent, it comes and goes). How do you treat or handle this? Experiences please. Thank you.

My husband uses Ibruprofen at a fairly high dose (600-800 mg) as needed, usually about 2x a day. He tried also darvocet and tylenol w/ codeine but they have neg side effects and we only use very rarely as a last resort.

Thank you for your response.

After searching the net, I came across this pdf file which might be helpful to others - it is a write up of symptom management that is intended for healthcare workers who treat ALS patients.

http://www.mywhatever.com/cifwriter/content/41/downloads/als_appendix_d.pdf

There is a section on page 51 of the document for pain management.
It is noted that codeine should not be used because it can be constipating and it also has psychotomimetic effects.
