ALS Gene Study
Updated February 2009

Researchers at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center are seeking individuals with and without ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) for participation in an ALS Gene Study conducted by Dr. Robert H. Brown, Jr. We have been conducting this research for several years but have recently relocated from Massachusetts General Hospital to the University of Massachusetts Medical Center.

The purpose of this study is to search for genes and environmental factors that may cause or increase the risk of developing ALS. This study includes individuals with either familial or sporadic ALS and possibly some family members. We are also looking for unrelated, unaffected individuals as population controls, such as spouses or friend. Participation requires a one-time blood sample (or sometimes a saliva sample), completion of questionnaires about environmental and general medical/family history, and permission to review medical records pertaining to the onset and progression of the disease for those with ALS.

Part of the entry criteria is as follows:

Be diagnosed with ALS (or be an unaffected, unrelated spouse or population control)
Be willing to give a blood sample (or in some cases a saliva sample)
Be willing to complete questionnaires about your environment and your family/medical history
To find out more about this study, please contact:
