Researchers look to understand the causes of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), in the hope of finding new ways to treat the disease. A new study published online in the Cell Press journal Neuron shows that a common gene mutation in ALS generates a deadly protein that may cause the damage in the brain that leads to ALS.

Toxic protein aggregates (amyloid beta (Aβ) protein, α-synuclein, and tau proteins) have been linked to so many neurodegenerative diseases already, leading to work on immunotherapy and disease-modifying treatments, that I hope there will be cross-over benefit to ALS. Especially with all the funding that came in this year, my fingers are crossed for a breakthrough across the board. Ever hopeful...
