Antisense drugs are being researched to treat a variety of diseases[2][3] such as cancers (including lung cancer, colorectal carcinoma, pancreatic carcinoma, malignant glioma and malignant melanoma), diabetes, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Duchenne muscular dystrophy and diseases such as asthma, arthritis and pouchitis with an inflammatory component. As of 2014 two antisense drugs have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), fomivirsen (marketed as Vitravene) as a treatment for cytomegalovirus retinitis and mipomersen (marketed as Kynamro) for homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia.

Ther was a phase 1 antisense trial for sod1. They found it safe and it did decrease blood levels and also did diffuse into the tissues ( all good things) there was no clinical improvement noted at the initial dose. What I was told a year ago is that they are reformulating it to make it more effective and there should be further clinical trials coming up. They have also developed antisense technology for c9 orf72 and it has proven effective in the lab( tested on cells derived through ips technology from the skin of c9 people. They are working to get it into clinical trials for c9 people. I have said more than once that I would crawl through broken glass to be in that trial!
Antisense technology has worked for some other diseases including a rare form of cystic fibrosis
