Treatment of ALS with Genipin?

The following and recently published article describes a link of ALS onset and specific activity of the sympathetic nervous system on the molecular level, triggered by a mitochondrial protein named UCP2. In line with the hypothesis presented there, an US-patent has been applied at the end of last year, describing treatment of ALS by inhibition of UCP2 (which can simply be found using google scholar search). In any case, this is just theoretical. However, one inhibitor of UCP2, named genipin, is freely available e.g. in gardenia fructus extract (which contains relatively high amounts of genipin) and is used in traditional chinese medicine.

This is a fascinating article and rings true to much of my experience. I am researching this now. Genipin is easy as it is orally administered.
