Default ALS and skin sensitivity

In your care of people with ALS, have you found that they develop VERY sensitive skin? We have a dear lady who's skin is so sensitive, she breaks out in large, raised, wet blisters... Sometimes this has been linked to plastics or adhesives, and other times we can not find a link?

Does this sound familiar?

What has worked to promote or maintain skin integrity?

Default Skin Sensitivity

Hi,

My mom had ALS plus she had an array of vascular problems, so she was in and out of surgery a lot. The tape the nurses would put around her wound would be very uncomfortable for her, I believe it was plastic or latex. She would break out in little bumps that would become very sore. So the nurses went to tape that was like paper and that helped a bit better; it also helped when I was the one doing the dressing changes as I wasn't in a hurry like the homecare nurses were (because they had a strict schedule to follow, and I understand that) and I would very slowly remove the tape and try to distract her somehow with my weird sense of humor!

I don't know if this helps at all but good luck to you.

Take care,

I am wondering the same thing. Every time they take blood from me I get large black and blue spots. This never happened before. Plus I also get sharp indigestion all the time now, also a new thing. I think when the nerves and muscles are not working, everything else goes a little haywire. I wonder if a dermotologist could recommend something for your loved ones?

Hi Cindy. I think as your arms atrophy the needle is going to bruise more. It does with me. As for the indigestion have you started taking any new meds or supplements or vitamins?

Hello,
I am a PSW-palliative care specialist, I have worked with ALS. There is a product called Cavillon. It is an all around great product. It is a barrier cream for prevention as well as when wounds occur. The greatest thing is that you put it on before a dressing and the tape will adhere to it. Just not sure if you can buy it in the store or if you have to get it through the home care RN's/RPN's.
