The only reason it was of interest to me is because we recently went to a UK conference on stem cell treatment and one of the other speakers was an highly thought of italian researcher in Edinburgh University who spends her workiing life working with fruit flies to test literally hundreds of potential new drugs for ALS
Apparently thir biological make up mimic humans in a lot of ways but their lifecycle is short, so they can use many more flies more efficiently to test new drugs. She also pointed out that a certain hopefull vice president from Alaska had said what a waste of money research on fruit flies was. They are BIG in ALS research
