Scary wheelchair failure

Very cool. Ive been looking at the Permobil X850, the X8 Extreme, and but my rep says the V6 is coded so we ve started the order process.

Lowy the V6 I believe is also Aussie. What more do you need to know? :)

I hope that the order process runs smoothly for you and you are up and running soon!

God bless, Janelle x

It is indeed, Janelle, you Aussies know your off road stuff. Back in 2010 Aussies ranked my moto #1 in a 12 bike comparison. :)

Lowy (nice, Janelle!),

About the V6. My husband has one, and he loves it. It is, however, a second chair. His Permobile is his primary. We just took a three week road trip where he thought he would use only the V6, but it does not accomodate the hip pads that keep his legs from turning out (and subsequently jumping off the foot rests on their own). I wound up getting out his third chair (long story about why we didn't have the newer one), a much older permobile that we bought as a backup, for use in hotel rooms (space)) and because it supports his legs better over long periods of time.

We started without power leg rests and just had them added. They help a lot, but the foot plates are much smaller to accmodate those front wheels turning.

The V6 is great if you are fairly mobile and active. Futher on, however, it may not accept all of the attachments that make other chairs more friendly for PALS.

Here's hoping you don't need anything more "extreme" in the way of attachments for many years to come!

Nuts, the same is true for my X8. The seat will not fit my long term needs.

I will have to figure out some way to add lateral trunk supports for my short term needs.

We have talked about eventually turning it into a Franken chair by morphing on a Permobil Corpus 3g seat in the long run.

Steve, you are so resourceful! I would love to see pictures if you do "operate" on your chair!

I wound up tearing one of Matt's old tshirts and tieing his thighs together during our trip. It wasn't elegant, but it worked in the short run.

Depending on how the leg rests mount to the chair, you may be able to use a very simple and inexpensive solution. Go to a toy store or even Build-a-Bear and get stuffed animals that fit firmly between your knees and the leg rests. I had a squirrel and a racoon that worked perfectly with my old Invacare power chair. My Permobil has the lateral supports so I no longer need my critters. I rather miss them because they were conversation pieces and toddler magnets!

Your wheelchair may have optional lateral thigh supports that can be added to keep his knees from falling outward. Check with your wheelchair provider or go to the website for your brand and model and check. This is the kind of thing that a chair chosen for a person with ALS must be adaptable for
-- and that means purchasing it with the help of a wheelchair seating specialist.

Love the nick name, Janelle!

Awesome Lowy! In that case I hope it sticks!
God bless, Janelle x

Fortunately, I still have sufficient mobility to quickly exit the chair if necessary. ..I think;)
Steve

Hmmmm. I tested getting out of the wheelchair quickly in a safe controlled environment. I think I would be at the bottom of the Grand Canyon before I could get out.

Time to start looking into ejection seats;)

Steve

Steve if anyone could add an ejection seat, I think it would be you!

You'll be pleased to know my beloved Henry has finally had his new batteries installed. After two weeks I'm raring to go! Unfortunately I promised Wayne I would wait 24hrs (batteries on charge) before going for a burn. 70 minutes to go...

God bless, Janelle x

HA! Ejection seat, LOVE IT! Add an air bag to land on and maybe a parachute to slow down the descent ...
