"]I Put My Dog Down Today"

Max
Very appropriate esp if you're an animal lover!

Me too Max. Read it from your FB page. Tears rolled

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog’s owners, Ron, his wife, Lisa, and their little boy, Shane, were all very attached to Belker and they were hoping for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying. I told the family we couldn’t do anything for Belker and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker’s family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.

The little boy seemed to accept Belker’s transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker’s death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, “I know why.”

Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I’d never heard a more comforting explanation.

He said, “People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life — like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?” The six-year-old continued, “Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay as long.”

If a dog was your teacher, these are some of the lessons you might learn:

When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.
Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.
Thrive on attention and let people touch you.
When you’re happy, dance around and wag your entire body.
Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.
Never pretend to be something you’re not.
If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.
When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently.

That was sad and touching...been there done that. I have loved several dogs in my lifetime, and it is always brutal when they reach the end of their lives!
I always swear I will never get another dog because of how hard it is to lose them.
Currently I have a 4 year old dog that I am closer to than any other dog in my lifetime. Harlee is a female Old English Bulldog....she is the dog of my life! I sincerely hope I pass before she does.
Since I have been in decline....she seems to know I am sick, when I am feeling bad...she knows and is like my shadow. She has become very protective of me, and seems to know when I need her the most. When I leave the house she waits at the window for my return.
There was movie "Marlee and Me", about 5 years ago that is a dog and her family story...it rocked my world because of how real the story line was. I highly recommend this movie....make sure you have a fresh box of tissues handy, because you will need all of them.

Hi, Mark --

After their wedding, newspaper writers John and Jennifer Grogan move to Florida. In an attempt to stall Jennifer’s "biological clock", John gives her a puppy. While the puppy Marley grows into a 100 pound dog, he loses none of his puppy energy or rambunctiousness. Meanwhile, Marley gains no self-discipline. Marley’s antics give John rich material for his newspaper column. As the Grogans mature and have children of their own, Marley continues to test everyone’s patience by acting like the world’s most impulsive dog.

Thanks, just pulled it down and am sending it too the TV disk as soon as I finish the quarantine scan.

It's Sandy's night to pick, so we'll see :)

I don't remember exactly why but I know I watched Marley and Me and for some reason hated it. I don't know if it was just because it was so sad or what. I know it was the worst reaction I ever had to a movie in my life. Kim
