My new EMG was pushed to today at 4pm. See what happens? On another note: has anyone ever experienced a feeling in bottom of feet like there is a mass of flesh, lump or something under the skin. My right foot feels like there is something there right where my toes start. Very strange feeling, podiatrist said it was Nuerological and there was nothing there? Just asking.

Still feeling rough with the bubbling calfs and flaciculations in arms, neck. Muscle Biop still feels sore. Took a nice chunk out. The EMG today is being done by a Certified EMG specialist. Hope it provides me some direction. If it wasn't for these flaciculations (on top of everything else) I would not be so concerned about ruling out ALS. I have several follow ups with Docs going into the end of the year so it looks like this will never end. Take care.

The diagnostic criterion are rather complicated. This is a motor neuron disease not a sensory system disease. I had a probable diagnosis in 2009 with clean EMGs. Then fasiculations and a high CPK 3 turned up in a routine physical with my internist. Back to University of Virginia neurology department and the first dirty EMG. Actually the first position that mentioned ALS was the neurosurgeon who was fusing my neck. Since I've worked in the medical industry for 35 years I do speak medical and therefore get spoken to as if I am second-year resident very often. It was just sort of the offhand comment of the surgeon thinking out loud. My hand had already been we can atrophied for a couple years before this so asking strangers to open bottles of water for me was nothing new. I have never heard of a muscle biopsy in the ALS diagnostic criteria. My understanding, and I'm not a physician, is that the criterion include weakness , atrophy, Babinski sign, and a lack of implication in the sensory nervous system. In many ways it is a very deductive diagnosis, in other words it's got to be ALS it can't be anything else. I asked my neurologist why the first four EMGs were clear and the last one was dirty. He wasn't sure but that's why he went over my records for almost an hour before delivering the news. I had been having muscle spasms with the weakness but no twitches. Mine is distal onset which may be a different pattern. This set of symptoms hits everyone completely differently. Good luck we're here for you.

Jay,

Good luck today with the EMG.

I also have had the "ball under the foot" thing. Pain is located in the ball of the foot between 3 & 4th toes and it hurts like the dickens. In my case, it's a "morton's neuroma". I had it surgically removed about 6 years ago... but it's back! (which is not unusual). My ortho surgeon said I need to wear wider shoes even though standard width fit me well and cause no discernible discomfort. She explained that even the smallest pressure on the outside edges of the foot can aggravate the neuroma and then ZINGO - you're walking on thumbtacks.
