Hi everyone,

I'm Mick's wife Ang from Bolton in England, and Mick has been diagnosed with MND in Dec 08, He is 49 ad was wondering if anyone has suffered with heartburn related to this condition ? It has currently affected both legs now so awaiting an electric wheelchair as now travelling into hands too but ha started with heartburn in the last two or three weeks although has always had a little troublewith his stomach muscles ie: spasticity and fascilations, any advice would be great.:)

I have been experiencing heartburn and related symptoms for about a year. I hadn't thought they were related to ALS but now you have me wondering. Just travelling fast in my scooter over a bumpy path or road will set it off.

It makes us wonder too, He only has to lie flat sometimes and it can happen, but has never been bothered with it prior to having MND:smile:. Will pobably mention it at next consultants meeting just didn't want to ignore it if it may be related and there was somthing we are not doing thats maybe causing it thanks for your input, nice to know where not alone at last.:?

Ang, I'd be interested in hearing what your consultant has to say about it.

John

Yes not until sept, although his specialist nurse rang last week and said it may be sooner as he can't take his own weight anymore and when they last saw him in April he was still walking, but had a hernia op and has deteriated further since then. But will update you once we have seen him.:-|

I've found any severe shock to the system, like an operation, seems to give the body a one-time downward step in condition. I can imagine a hernia operation especially would affect walking.

Heartburn, oh yes. In my husbands case it was all the acid coming back up. It is definately ALS related. He now takes prilosec, no problems anymore. Before we got the script for this, he took a cheaper generic Zantax from Walmart, and it worked too. HUGS Lori

That's helpful info. Acid reflux is my problem too. Thanks Lori.

The prilosec takes a couple of days to get in the system and work, but it is so working. The script for it is 135 bucks at Walmart, but the OTC is the same thing. The generic Zantax is about 6 bucks for a months supply

I have noticed heartburn sometimes after taking my formula. Linda

Thanks everyone at least now we don't need to start worrying that maybe something else maybe going and its just an additionalbonus of MND x

hi, mick and ang...so sorry for mick and you of course..in many ways the carer suffers as much..am a scouser living in wales..i have no diagnosed..just the upper motor neoron syndrome..amazingly you have touched on a symptom that i have had for some years. i e, the gastro problem.. the people on here are brilliant..and can i recomend Wrighty, as very knowledgeble............god bless, john.

My onset and a hiatal hernia came at the same time, but I never realized it could be related, since I only learned about the onset itself in hindsight. I was 14, and the doc was stammering out the results in disbelief. He had never seen anyone as young as I was develop a hiatal hernia.

Hi Tokahfang,

WE wonder now how long Mick may have already had this condition as in Sep 2007 he went in for his first hernia op and then developed drop foot from there to his diagnosis in dec 2008 of ALS, and has recently had a further hernia op on the other side and now his walking has gone altogether and the heartburn started and his arms and hands are now becoming affected, I often wonder ifhe hadn'thad his first op if it would ever have raised its ugly head.
