Cord blood is the blood remaining in the placenta and the umbilical cord after a women gives birth.

Unlike regular blood circulating in bodies, cord blood contains stem cells, including blood-forming hematopoietic cells.

Cord blood is useful in treating genetic disorders and other illness in which stem cell transplants are used.

For more information about cord blood, and banking cord blood for later use please see the cord blood banking guide.
