International Gene Search for Typical ALS

May 17, 2006

Our friends at the Robert Packard Center for ALS Research at Johns Hopkins will undertake a gene search for sporadic ALS. The million dollar study will involve ALS organisations internationally, and is the first study of its kind to date.

The study was announced at the 2006 Packard Center's symposium and was presented by Bryan Traynor, M.D. The study will include Dr. Traynor and John Hardy, Ph.D., two scientists under grant with the Packard Center for ALS Research.

The international gene search will screen for genes that are common to patients with sporadic ALS. The study hopes to uncover whether or not genes take any part in sporadic ALS. The results, if clear, will shape the future of ALS research.
