Waterloo Lawmaker Dies of ALS/MNDMarch 25, 2006
Barton Schwieger of Waterloo Iowa has passed away from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis at the age of 64. Barton served as a senator in the 1970's and was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease in 1998.
Barton, a Republican, was elected to the House of Representatives in 1970 and was elected to the Senate in 1972. In 1974 Barton Schwieger ran for the United States House of Representatives and lost to Senator Charles Grassley.
Over the last two decades Barton performed private law practice and kept involved with local Waterloo republican politics.
Diagnosed with ALS in 1998, Barton was forced to close his practice a year later as his health was deteriorating quickly. Barton had practiced law for over 33 years before ALS took over control of his body.
Barton Schwieger bravely fought the affects of Lou Gehrig's disease for over 8 years before succumbing to the disease.
